UT finally updated my CASH page! Looks like everything is in the computer, finally. Dunno if they still need to run verification again or hopefullyy, they’ll give me my finaid package soon. :)

I just checked and I pretty much got no money outside of loans. But there was no mention of scholarships. Does that mean I got nothing or will they send that out later?

filmdirector

College of Communication doesn’t have any freshman departmental scholarships. This college is much worse from financial point of view than Engineering, Business etc

But you can apply for scholarships later when you are already there.

People who are getting finaid packages now have to accept them within 3 weeks or they will lose them. Some of these people will not enroll and go somewhere else. Their money will be offered to somebody else.

hmm, my S got the aid email today. how much is UT for OOS?

OMG it’s $17K/ semester for OOS!

i wonder if the aid is for one semester or 2 b/c it says Fall 2012, which would imply one semester only.

^pretty sure its by semester.

received mine today.

Just for notification purposes, my EFC was around 1500.
And most smaller scholarships are later

my gf got 7800 a semester from scholarships and grants

she is going in as a freshman biology major (cns)

im still waiting to hear back from ut for transfer (3.8 gpa) 1st choice cockrell bme 2nd choice cns biology

xcloudy, did you receive your financial aid package? I’m kind of timing my D’s with how long it took your CASH page to update that they were in and then how long from there it took you to hear about financial aid.

Thanks!

Hmm, weird I received my finaid from UTD and they gave me like 3 loans and only 2 grants that didn’t even total that much and I STILL needed more money, while UT gave me grants and scholarships that covered everything I’d actually thought it would be backwards, is that common?

UT Austin is much better with need-based grants than UTD, but UTD is generally better at getting top applicants big, hefty merit aid

UTMom2: No problem! I hope you get a satisfactory package. I just checked late night Saturday and I had gotten my aid! However, I don’t think aid is processed on weekends, so I’m assuming it was updated late Friday (I last checked on Friday morning). I’d estimate around 3 days to be on the safe end, though I’m sure it can still vary depending on other factors.

The difference between UTD & UT Austin is in the definition of “top”.

You can compare finaid from different universities

Wavylays is correct. The percentage of students receiving solely merit aid at UT-Austin is quite small compared to UTD. UT is typically quite generous with grants/scholarships for those with low EFC’s. Those students without need tend to not receive many, if any, merit scholarships from UT. This is true in my DD’s case, as well as her high school friends considering UT. Even at the state level, many scholarships, e.g. The Top 10% scholarship and Terry Foundation scholarships, are merit/need based.

“Top” students at UT Austin usually also apply to universities of ivy league level. “Top” students at UTD don’t. That’s the difference in the definition of “top”.

YaYa, regardless of one’s definition of “top,” the fact remains that pure merit aid at UT is quite small and dwindling each year. As my moniker suggests, I graduated from UT in 1986. Back then, it was much easier to receive some sort of merit-only scholarship, even if it was $500. That is not so today, where if one’s EFC is high, purely merit scholarships are very few and very far between.

Case in point, DD’s ranked 4/420 (in-state), 4.0 GPA UW, 5.29 weighted, with a 35 ACT. She was accepted into McCombs and BHP. One would think that would warrant a little something, even a small $500 scholarship to say ‘Good job–you worked hard.’ Her “financial aid” package? $5,600 in an unsubsidized Stafford loan at 6.8% and $20,600 in a direct parent (PLUS) loan at 8.9%. This is true of 4 other kids from her high school with similar stats and EFC’s.

I’m grateful we have the money to send her to UT, but IMO it appears there should be some middle ground when granting scholarship monies.

txex86
Yes, of course. Because there are too many kids like your daughter at UT Austin and not too many at UTD.

Need-based grants from UT Austin are NOT university money. They are Pell grants, Texas grants, FSEOG, Top 10% scholarships. You get them all together and you come very close to full ride.

I don’t know if it’s going to help anyone but just a suggestion for the future
[Texas Student Housing](http://texasstudenthousing.net/)

Yaya, I’m well aware that need-based grants are NOT university money, but scholarship money IS university money. Hence, my post above. For students like my daughter and her friends who are impacted by this, they are none too thrilled that the grants you cite above lead to a “full ride” as you put it, while they are offered little, and in most cases nothing, yet have higher achievement in many cases, comparatively speaking, to those who are receiving these “need-based” grants. In addition, almost all of those grant recipients receive scholarship aid as well form UT.

The point is that merit scholarships need to be re-thought. As of now, only ten to twenty will receive the Forty Acres scholarship (full ride) in this freshman class of about 7,100 students, ~.28%. Perhaps the Texas Exes and the University should consider creating smaller, merit-only scholarships to attract students like my daughter’s friends who are considering other schools because of UT’s lack of
acknowledgment.

My D was offered a full scholarship at UTD, and she has not even applied to the school. However, if she does not get enough financial aid from UT Austin, she will accept the full-ride to University of Arizona, rather than UTD. She wants the full university experience, and while UTD has merits, it is lacking in some aspects, at least as far as she is concerned.

I haven’t receive financial aid or any scholarships. I finished financial aid at the end of February. Is anyone in the same situation?
