When asking for more merit aid, is it best for the parent or the student to email?

Thank you all!
I did know they were separate (merit & F.Aid). I realize now I wasn’t clear in my post. My apologies! I was meaning to reference the communication between students and school vs parents on either/both). Regardless, the information/answers are helpful!
Being new to the entire process, it can be confusing to navigate since schools each have differences in everything from who/how to contact per topic, timing, the process, even finding the release forms allowing parent communication!
Thanks again!

I successfully negotiated more merit for my son just recently. You can find my original post in the Syracuse University threads. I decided to do it myself because I knew my son would not want to do it and if he did, he would not articulate his case successfully. It was surprisingly easy. I sent a blind email to both the Financial Aid and Admissions offices using an offer from another school as leverage. It was actually the Financial Aid office that responded to me and they gave him an additional $2500 a year, which nearly matched the other offer.

What do you mean a blind email ? The recipients couldn’t see the other recipients ?

No that I just blindly sent it to the main email at both admissions and financial aid. I guess blind email was not the correct term. General email is what I meant. I didn’t send it to any particular person.
