I know that when one submits a FAFSA, they have the right to correct it until June 2022 for the 2021-2022 year, right?
I want to know if it’s too late to correct the financial part of the FAFSA if the school has already awarded Financial Aid to a student in the respective semester?
Well…sort of. @kelsmom can clarify, but I believe all changes to the 2021-2022 FAFSA need to be made and processed before YOUR college academic year ends.
It’s possible to correct information, but it shouldn’t be done unless something was entered incorrectly in the first place. As @thumper1 asked, what is the reason for the correction? Some items are not supposed to be changed by the student.
I would suggest contacting the financial aid officer at the school. We had a correction and the financial aid officer at the school made the change. We received confirmation via email from FAFSA that the change was made by the school for us.
Some items aren’t supposed to be changed…assets aren’t as if the date of initial filing, for example. If this amount was correct as of the initial date of filing, it can’t be changed.
I had so much trouble with the fafsa. I was stuck not being able to verify my info, but eventually after an hour on the phone with the kindest agent ever, was able to sign, despite still having trouble with the verification process. All I needed was my D to sign. Somehow we erased all the information and had to start over and both re-sign (she is also having trouble with the verification of details).
I asked the agent how I add 2 schools, she said that we needed to wait a few days for the first schools to download the form and then we could go back in and change 2 of the schools by taking 2 out. I now am wondering how I will be able to get back to the form if I can’t get the verification to work, and secondly, is that not changing the form?
I think the financial applications are much more complicated than the actual school applications (maybe because I didn’t have to do them or write essays). I have managed to make so many mistakes, and with the css one, I have made 2 big mistakes, one of which was not renaming uploaded files. I was trying to act quickly under stress and this is what happens. I point this out for other people to benefit and not look as dumb as I must.
It’s usually pretty easy to log in & out of the FAFSA & to make changes. Your experience highlights the importance of writing down any passwords and save keys, to make it easier to get back in later. Once the FAFSA processes, your D should just be able to log back in, delete two schools, add in two schools, sign & submit the changes. I don’t believe that the parent has to sign that change, but I could be wrong - make sure your child verifies that the change is successfully submitted.
Thanks for your help. I haven’t forgotten any of the passwords, but the problem is still with the verification. I got an email telling me that my details have been verified (with my maiden name on the top of the email, even though I have changed my name on my SS card after I got married). Does this verification mean that the form is processed or just something else. I just am wondering when we could enter the form to make changes. Do they send you an email when the process is complete? If I take 2 schools out and replace them, do the original schools lose access to the form? I think if I knew what I was doing, this would be easy
I wanted to add to that, but all the buttons are missing from the bottom…. I will have my daughter do it, because I do not want to mess it up and disappoint her.
It sounds like you needed to give the FSA ID a day or two to process, and now it has completed processing. You can go in & make changes now (or at least should be able to make the changes).
But there may be an issue. Your maiden name was at the top? Did you change your name with Social Security when you got married? If not, you have a mismatch. Schools will most likely ask you for documentation to prove that you are the person with the name you used. And you need to change it for tax purposes. Several of us on CC, myself included, neglected to change our names with SSA when we got married. It caught up with me when I got a new job - I9 verification was a no-go until I changed my name at the SSA office.
That’s the weird thing, because I did change it, but noticed my maiden name at the top. I will see about that. In any case France now insistes putting people’s maiden names on official stuff. I gave my married name and signed with my married name for my driver’s licence but got it back with my maiden name….and my married name on the signature! The guy at the prefecture told me that is how they do it now.
My maiden name is also on our French tax form, even though they address it to us both with our married names.
