When colleges post GPA avg of incoming class is it UW or Weighted?

Hi all,

New to this process with a rising hs senior and trying to figure out what some of his target/match school might be. I know I need to compare his overall GPA to the average GPA of the most recent admissions year. So, for example, UCONN business School says the average GPA of admitted students is 3.5 (http://www.collegesimply.com/colleges/connecticut/university-of-connecticut/admission/). Is that weighted or unweighted? (my child’s W and UW GPAs are quite different since he did average in all AP and Honors courses). Thank you for any suggestions on how to interpret this!

It depends on the college. Some colleges also recalculate the GPA for applicants using a uniform formula.

No correct answer for all colleges.

great thank you!

If you look for GPA data on the school’s Common Data Set (Google “Common Data Set [school]”) , the information if provided will be unweighted. I looked up UConn’s latest CDS, but they don’t provide GPA info. They do provide info on class ranking of matriculated students who reported that info (50% were in the top 10%, 85% in top 25%). See http://www.oir.uconn.edu/CDS_2015_2016.pdf. As to GPA’s reported on AO webpages, it’s as @thumper1 wrote.

In general, as you do your research on colleges, in addition to the AO website, also pull up the CDS which will have more detailed info on student profiles.

thanks! yes the UCONN data I found was specifically for their business program, I realized later. #steeplearningcurve

@newenglandjane Been there! :slight_smile:
