I'm feeling a little behind in the game because I'm in my junior year, and I'm still not sure what I want to do for my major.
It seems like I should have started preparing years before, by pursuing my interests. But I don't know what my strengths really are. I'm interested in a lot of things, but I'm not really exceptional or good at any of them. (no awards or anything, just hobbies or a mediocre amount of skill)

Junior year isn’t too late, you should start pursuing whatever interests you have ASAP. When I was in high school, I had a lot of interests as well (still do btw) but you’ll never know if its for you if you don’t try it. Take some college classes if you can, and participate actively in extracurriculars. Don’t just do them for your applications though, do them only if you enjoy them and can relate to them. And don’t underestimate yourself, that’ll get you no where.

I decided on computer engineering around my freshman year at college, after working a few years in hardware and tech support jobs/internships during high school.

I’m a junior and I still haven’t decided either lol it’s ok

I really doubt most people know what they’re doing in life at this age

I picked direction to go during the summer before my senior year. Still haven’t decided what I’m going to end up doing for the rest of my life, but isn’t that the fun in it? Not knowing where you are going?

I thought engineering for all of high school, and I applied to a bunch of engineering schools…but now, I don’t know anymore. I definitely don’t want to be a doctor, and I like math/physics, but is engineering for me?

I guess I’ll only know once I start taking classes.

But no, I don’t know what I want to do with my life, other than it has to be something that stimulates me intellectually.

I took a big bite into a Big Mac. And that’s when I decided that I was destined to become a food service worker.

semi srs

not srs

I kinda found out 7th grade year, I knew I wanted to do business, I still do, but I just don’t know what field yet, most likely Accounting or Logistics maybe.

Freshman year, I took computer programming, as I was leaning towards a computer related career (probably information technologies, as I wasn’t a huge science dork then). Towards the end of that year, the music program led me to believe that I wanted to be involved in a music major of some sort.
Sophomore year, chemistry made me want to do something sciencey. I was leaning towards chemical engineering.
Junior year, I liked physics even more than chem. I liked the E/M stuff, so I decided I wanted to do electrical engineering.
Now I’m leaning towards computer engineering, kind of coming full circle. =P

hmm … suggestion from the peanut gallery … ask this on the parents forum … and see how many people had no idea in high school … or thought they knew in high school and changed their mind. Just the thoughts of a 50+ year old dad.

PS - I knew late my sophomore year of college … when I was exposed to a major I had no idea existed until then.

I picked a general direction to go in 7th grade and I’ve stuck with it. It’s becoming more narrow with time.

Probably mid sophomore year and finalized my “dream school” in July before senior year.

I’m a junior too and have no particular interests that stand out either and I have no idea what I want to major in. All I really know is I hate math and love English but I know English isn’t a worthwhile major so I’m not sure what I’m going to do… So don’t worry you aren’t alone

“I really doubt most people know what they’re doing in life at this age”

I agree. At this point I think I want to be a math major but I don’t really see how you can know that without ever having taken a college math class, so I’ll have to wait and see.

I know that the majority of people at my school have no idea what they want to major in at all. Just figure out what you like to do best, and go from there.

Until 7th grade, I had wanted almost every career on Earth (Nurse, chef, teacher, nurse again, lawyer [this was actually something I stuck with for a little while]) then decided 7th-8th grade I wanted to be a journalist. And I’ve stuck with it so far, but who knows.

I’m pretty stuck on my career and major decision so far. Right now my projected major is toxicology and my goals of becoming a veterinarian hasn’t changed. I changed my mind so many times, I remember when I wanted to be a lawyer, but I couldn’t debate to save my life. Also, I wanted to become a psychiatrist, then my parents bombarded me with threats saying, “You’ll never get into medical school at this rate!!” I could change my mind, I’ve been thinking about becoming a high school teacher for some time.

I used to want to be a psychiatrist but it was mostly just because I saw a lot of them.

Almost everyone I went to college with changed their major at least once.

I saw dark knight and knew instantly I wanted to be a vigilante.

Ah. Great question… “What school did you apply to/want to go to?” is what most people ask. But I get to bite back with “what do you want to major in?” (Schools are just labels that don’t really say much to me)

At least I have been going with engineering since I was young, and now I’ve decided in Junior year to take electrical. Everything else just does not appeal as much, and hopefully I get into lots of logic/problem solving :)
