Just wondering when and what order people took them

Depends on which test. Son is taking SAT for the first time in November junior year, took PSAT last year and is of course taking it again this month. Plans to take the SAT again in spring of junior year if he gets less than 2000, and in fall of senior year if he gets over that but not over 2200. Depends also on AP studying, would not take the SAT in May when AP tests are, but June if in the spring so he can switch gears to that.

For languages, I’d try them after four years of the language, doable sophomore year if you had the language in middle school. Math I if you are on a non-honors path or Math II the year you take pre-calc if you are on an honors path. Would not suggest waiting until calc to take Math II SAT II.

Only trouble is that be careful if studying for AP and SAT II, so far they seem very different and studying for each might be confusing as to what to focus on. I would say if you have two years of a science, honors first and then AP, try the SAT II at the end of the honors year.

I personally do not see any harm in retaking the SAT, but the subject tests can be difficult as you do really need to study for each and can’t depend on general test-taking skills. Two SAT II per day seemed good for my son, I’d only suggest three in a day if you are taking something new that you are really really familiar with.

YMMV.

For D,
Soph yr: chem in May; math 2 in June (AP chem in may)
Jr yr: PSAT in Oct, SAT1 in Nov, ACT in Dec, bio in June (AP calc AB, AP bio, AP Eng lang, AP span in may)

SAT II Literature, history and Math 2 on Nov
SAT I on Dec ( collegeboard messes up with my Oct test. )

For my D, she took SAT1 in Dec and Mar of Junior. SAT2 in June of junior. All tests for application done by June. Best time to take SAT2 is the June right after you take an AP or at least honor class of corresponding subject (pre-Calc for Math2).

I took the SAT in June after junior year, and November of senior year. Took subject tests (math II and physics) October of senior year.

D1: SAT I March of junior year, SAT II’s May junior year (Bio and French, after taking AP Bio and AP French, but the tests are very different, don’t assume getting a 5 on an AP will prepare you well for SAT II’s)
ACT June of junior year, September of senior year, SAT II December senior year (Latin, US History)

D2: SAT II June of sophomore year (World, French, Lit), PSAT Oct junior year, SAT November Junior year, ACT December junior year, SAT II January junior yr, SAT I March, ACT April, SAT II June (Latin, US History). complete testing before senior year.
