When do colleges notify you of any merit scholarships?

I was told that some schools will notify you within the acceptance letter and others will send another letter afterward. Is this true? I am curious because I was recently accepted to Bloomsburg University but they did not indicate whether I received any merit scholarships. I don't think this is because I didn't receive any because I am well above the average GPA and SAT score (their average is a 3.2 and 1500, I have a 4.1 and 2100). However, a friend of mine was just accepted into Arcadia and was offered $16,000 per year with his acceptance letter. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Method and timing of notification varies by school.

That school’s website says that they notify as part of the admission’s process. Their website seems odd about scholarships. It seems like most awards are for current students. Did you look at the website?

and some frosh scholarships have a separate application.

Do you see any indication that this school gives generous awards?

You can’t go by what someone else got at another school. Some schools are generous with merit, some aren’t.

If you want/need merit, then you should apply to the schools that give them.

^Some schools will tell you with the acceptance letter; and some school will send you the award letter a few days later. You could always contact the school.

Did you apply for the honors college? I would ask them about that and merit scholarships. This is one of the PASSHE schools so I imagine they don’t have huge amounts available, but they might have some scholarships based on academic performance and demonstrated financial need. Ask them.

I don’t know anything particular about Bloomsburg but I do know that West Chester doesn’t typically notify scholarship recipients until after Christmas. Of course you don’t know until you know, but I would be surprised if you got nothing. Those stats in previous years would have gotten you money at WCU, and Bloomsburg is not quite as competitive.

I don’t know if you applied to Pitt but they are notifying their scholarship recipients now. Penn State typically notifies some time in February.

Good luck! I hope it comes through for you.

For one school, my D received the scholarship notice a few days before the admission notice. For the other ones, she received the notice a couple weeks to a couple months after the EA admission notice. For the RD school, it was a couple weeks after admission.
