CPSLO is near the top of my son’s list to attend next year, but financial information is an important part of that decision. Does anyone know approximately what date financial packages are sent out?
Another question - does the Tuition and Fees # on the Net Price Calculator for the CSUs include the Health Insurance? In our package from Merced, it broke out the Health Insurance. UCR did not. We haven’t gotten FA information from any other colleges yet.
My son is a current CP student and was told financial aid would be updated in his portal on April 1. I’m not sure about accepted, but non-admitted students though. I’d call the FA department. They’re very friendly and helpful. Good luck.
My brother is a freshman and his portal is already showing a preliminary aid package for the next school year. It’s been our experience that information is posted/made available on the portal sooner than when they notify you it’s there. Regarding health insurance, Cal Poly does not offer their own health plan/insurance like the UC’s do. There is a health center on campus that provides many services and the costs are included in the registration and tuition fees. Take a read of the information on this page: http://hcs.calpoly.edu/content/health/health-services. If you want more information regarding university fees, read here: https://afd.calpoly.edu/student_accounts/newstudentguide.asp. You’ll have to navigate several pages on the CalPoly website to be feel well informed, at least that’s how we felt about a year ago. If possible, take advantage of Open House on April 14-16, 2016, as this event will really address most of your questions and concerns: http://orientation.calpoly.edu/open-house. Congrats on your son getting accepted. CalPoly is a great university; it has really blown our expectations.
Cal Poly’s Health Center covers many medical issues at its office on campus. If you need referral off campus for additional medical care, the health center does not cover costs. If your health insurance does not cover your student at Cal Poly, the CSU’s do offer health insurance (or you can purchase another plan). The cost is on you and not included in the cost of attendance for Cal Poly. https://www.csuhealthlink.com/portal/translator.aspx?companyid=122&statecode=CA
I just changed my son’s primary doctor (under our current health plan) to a doctor located in San Luis Obispo.
Thank you all for the information. I didn’t realize that the UC and CSU health insurance issues were different. We have insurance, so it’s all good. It was just an expense added in at the UCs that you could waive and reduce the listed COA. My son’s portal was updated with financial info today! Aside from needing to work out the Cal Grant school listing to be CPSLO, I think we have the info we need. Cal Grant could not make their program any more confusing if they wanted to. CPSLO needs you to list SLO as your college choice on the Cal Grant website, which very oddly only lets you list only one school. It makes it hard to compare packages if you need to constantly revise your school of choice.
My son’s portal was just updated to show a small merit based scholarship offer for the 2016-2017 year. There is no mention of future years. Do these type of scholarships typically extend for the full four years, or is it a one-time award?
My son had an Outreach scholarship last year as a freshman and it did NOT renew this year. This is very disappointing. I did some googling, and from what I read, the Outreach scholarship was basically for freshman year only. Poly did offer us a Parent loan for $27,000 - which is pretty funny - we promptly declined that…
