I am looking for Summer 2012 internships. Should I start looking now or in later winter? (December, January).

You’re going to want to attend the info sessions for full time hires starting in September, but internship recruiting for top firms begins in January. First wave ends in March. Second wave ends in May. (semester system)

Quarter schools will differ by about one month.

Now is too early. It depends on the industry you’re looking into, too. My accounting major friends all had their summer internships settled by winter. On the other hand, I didn’t start sending my resume out until mid-March and got two offers in mid-May.

S was an engineering major. He had his resume ready to go as soon as he went back to school in the fall. He applied and interviewed for his summer '10 internship on campus in September or October of '09. Was offered a position in November and accepted in December.

Thank you everyone, this is great.
Would you say that you, your sons and/or daughters located internships independently or with considerable help from the school’s career center?

You shall start as soon as you go back to school. There shall be job postings and fall job fair information now at your school’s Career Center. My son who is a Supply Chain major applied in September last year, interviewed in October and got two offers in November for summer 2011 internships. All of his applications are through his school’s Career Center.

definitely depends on your career field…

lots of the summer internships I applied for had applications due in October. If you didn’t start looking until winter break, you would be out of the running for all the big ones in my field.

Several of the representatives of the companies that came to S’s Fall Career Fair suggested filling out the company’s online application. In some cases, students who filled them out before the career fair, actually got interviews during the Fair. Other representatives told students to go to their school’s Career Services website and apply for upcoming interviews. When doing so, some of the instructions included filling out the company’s online application.

Suggestion: Work on your resume now! Things happen fast in the fall. Also, be sure you have appropriate clothing for interviews. Suits are not necessary (in many cases) for internship interviews, but a nice pair of slacks (Dockers), a long sleeved shirt, blazer, dress shoes, and a tie are a must.

Like some people said: it really depends.

Accounting: early fall
Finance: winter
Industry (Consumer, pharma, tech(?)): early/mid spring

Start in early Fall in all cases and you will not regret. It is better too early than too late.

^ Not if the internships you’re looking to apply to aren’t posted until March or later. I couldn’t apply to anything in the fall, there wasn’t anything I was interested in advertising for summer positions yet.

As for finding them - I kind of had a mix of applying to places I found on my own and places I found on the online listings that Career Services maintains. Three of the four interviews I got were from places I’d applied on my own, one was for a place where I’d found the listing through Career Services. I did get help from Career Services for my resume and for a couple of my cover letters, but other than that I did it pretty much all on my own. It worked out great, I ended up with a full-time paid position (as a history major!).
