When do people actually submit their application?

If one wants to apply early and has everything reviewed and ready (recommendations, essays, etc.) by say, the end of September, would it be recommended to just submit it then, even though there would still be a month before the deadline?

I have heard at some colleges that the earlier you apply, the better your chances at an interview. Or does every early candidate at a school that offers interviews get interviewed? I am unclear on this.

Also, I have a question about the order in which applications are read. For example, Harvard says it reads applications in the order they are completed. Though when you submit your application does not factor into the decision, wouldn't there be at least some difference if your application was the first one read as compared to the 10,000th one? Or is the answer that each application is reviewed completely without comparisons to other similar apps.

Finally, if one has finished the application and the supplements for one school, but not the supplements for another school, can he/she just submit the application for that school and submit it for the other school at a later time? Or does that person have to submit to all their colleges at once?

I know that this is a lot as I am unfamiliar with the process, so I would really appreciate any help and any links to similar threads.

Thank you in advance.

Theoretically, you can send them in whenever, and it should have no impact on admissions.

In my opinion, however, the quicker you send them in when they’re ready, the better you are off.

But don’t send it just because you feel ready. Take a couple days off, then come back, and make sure you have everything ready. Double check everything! Get more people to read your essays, etc.

I’ve heard stories that some people waited til the last 10 minutes of the deadline to submit their application, only to have the server freeze.

also be sure you send in time for everything on the app to be received at the school by the deadline, including any items you are mailing. If transcripts or other items are going by snail mail, the deadline is the date the admissions office has to receive them, not the last date to post them. Some schools make exceptions for testing results though. For example, if you are taking late October tests and in your application you tell the school to expect to receive those results shortly after a Nov 1 deadline, some schools accept those later results. you have to check with your schools about that.
