Sending in Common App "immediately"

Did any of you actually do this?

I'm not sure I want to have to later mail my essay, etc. incomplete materials.
I was planning on submitting everything altogether December 1 (all online)

(timeline)

^ I have the same question...any thoughts?

my son did not send common app first then everything else later. He sent in everything for each school at one time. For example, school "A" was sent everything on Dec 1, then on Dec 2 he sent everything for school "B" and so on and so on. Hope this helps

From a purely egoistic standpoint of the applicant, there is no reason why you should. This is for Harvard's benefit, not yours.

It doesn't affect your chances at all whether you send your common app in now or on December 31. They'll read it all the same. The only difference it might make is that you are more likely to get an interview if you send it in earlier.

Harvard likes having the common apps in earlier so they can begin to process it during the off-season. Instead of doing the menial but necessary filing and categorizing during decisions season, they can get that out of the way. They also like having all of your materials in by December 1, so they can have an extra month to make decisions.

Nevertheless, they say they read applications "in order of submission," so if you want yours read early, send it in now. (It matters if you think you may receive a likely letter.)

thanks!! :)

I sent my application in the day after it was due and things still worked out fine.

cato91, have you been accepted to college yet? Did you get your info from a Harvard adcom? curious because my son spoke to an actual Harvard adcom and they told him they wait for all of the applicants data to come in before making any final decisions. A file is started as soon as the first piece of material is received, then as they receive things they are added to this file. No decisions are made until after the due dates. In fact, as thecount stated they even accept things late if they know that other pieces of information is still to come.

Please make sure you give out information that you know to be a fact and not speculation.

My son will be starting at Harvard next month.

Uhhh, guitars, perhaps you should read my post more carefully. I say essentially what you say: It doesn't affect one's chances at all whether one sends it today or December 31.

I am not a Harvard admissions officer. If I were, I probably wouldn't be posting on CC. But H's website does say, regarding this question:

"Are a student's chances of admission enhanced by submitting application materials before other applicants?

No. We request, however, that students submit the Common Application and the Harvard Application Supplement by December 1 if possible. Receipt of these two forms allows us to expedite application processing and to arrange personal interviews more quickly."

Voila! My thoughts in different words.

It's good to offer contrasting viewpoints. That's what a forum is for. But please don't resort to insults.

cato, there is no need to have been offended. My post was not asking if you were an admissions officer. I clearly undersood that you were not. It appeared that you were offering an "absolute" answer. It's always good to state your sources if you don't have first hand knowledge. as far a contrasting viewpoints, maybe you should just say "this is only my opinion" and let others take it as they wish. People are honestly looking for good advice so if something is "your" opinion, please say that.

p.s. some admissions officers DO post and offer advice on CC

yes, these forums are for advice and support so best of luck to you :)

thecount - haha. lucky

They still gave me an interview, too. ;) Seriously though, it was only a few hours after the deadline. (last minute obsessery and proof-reading, it's what I do)

I think there is a slight advantage to getting it in by early september. One of my fellow FUPpies (FUPpie-to-be) did so and his app became the model for assessing all future MIT apps because everyone in the admissions office read it. Then again, he was insane anyway (already had an olympiad medal under his belt) so I guess if you're a competitive applicant it will help.

Although if Harvard doesn't start reading ANY apps until december 1st then it probably won't matter as much.

thanks!! haha yeah, I'm not so awesome -_-

I sent my application the day it was due... and I got in. no worries.

haha ok thanks :)
