When do we get our @usc.edu email accounts. I already submitted my enrollment thing. and does usc have a web page for students where you can login and have your stuff organized other then the financial aid thing?

May not work until later.

If I remember correctly from last semester, you registered your email address at orientation...HOWEVER, it is activated a few days before your orientation session if you want to do it yourself.

This is all according to a friend who works in ISD's tech office:
What happens is the week before your orientation or move-in week, the ISD office receives your info such as name, id, etc. One particular person at ISD goes one by one and comes up with your 9 character username. He is the one who chooses it and you are stuck with it for your entire time at USC. Once he sets it up, then you just have to do First Login, which is what protokurios linked above to retrieve that user name and set your password.

Um... thats not how it worked last year, but it could have changed. Basically, (last year) you got to pick either:

Ex: John Smith
jsmith@usc.edu OR john.smith@usc.edu

I think either way, your login would be jsmith... However, this hinges on the fact that nothing has changed, and according to an inside source at ISD it has...

Technically, I think we all have the second email address. No one uses it, but we have it... I think.

Oh, by the way... those might actually be real email addresses (and they arent mine)... so dont send anything to them (I noticed they were actually linked...whoops)

Yeah we all have two email addresses. Everyone has one with your firstname.lastname@usc.edu/email), along with the alias created by the ISD guy.

correction: UNIX only supports 8-letter usernames, so people like me with 9 letters total get the last letter of their last name cut off:

scottjun {at} usc {dot} edu instead of what I hoped for: scottjung@usc.edu or even sjung@usc.edu.

I was told a lot of the process is automatically generated by ISD. If it is indeed a real person (I'm inclined to say it would be an overseas-born grad or PhD student), then it makes me a little more miffed that they would cut off my the last letter! oh well, can't help it. And yes, everyone has a 2nd email address in the form fname.lname@usc.edu. Just that when you reply to someone who's sent an email to that address, the reply comes from your shortened USC email.

plz don't spam my USC email account. i get enough spam already in that account.

^ lol, just put a spam filter on there and you should be set.

Actually, I did mean 8, as my name too is cut off. I miscounted.
About a real guy doing it, that's what my friend says. He works in the ISD Customer Support Center.

All usernames are automatically generated by ISD when you create your account. It would be a lot of effort to do it by hand for however many thousands of students enter each semester (undergrad and grad). Plus, you cannot change your username, unless you have a really, really good reason.

I feel so lucky...my last name is short and very unique, so my email address/username is just my last name :)

I know this is a minor issue to fuss about, but let's get this straight once and for all. The ISD staff person who does MANUALLY create every email alias assigned to every faculty, staff and student at USC is Eric Hattemer. First login does not have scripts to make an alias automatically for you; it searches the database for one already created by him, which he inputs into the database at the appropriate time in the summer. If you are registered for orientation F2 but tried to use first login before F1, you will get nothing.

lol, I spend too much time on CC. :p

Really? ISD policy says they are all automatically generated. Though, this wouldn't be the first time ISD hasn't followed their own policies :)

And you're right - it's 4am, why are we on CC?? (I'm "working" on my final projects)

yeah, i'm doing Writing 140 portfolio. So much fun :(
