When Do We Start Our 06-07 School Year?

For the incoming freshmen to 06-07 school year...

When do we choose our dorm?
When is the earliest date I can move in to my dorm?
When do we have our freshmen orientation?
When do we get to visit all the clubs/organization and sign up?
When do we choose our courses for fall semester?
When do we have our first lesson?
When do I sign up to work at library, dorm, etc?
When is the first 3-day weekend?

I greatly appreciate it if any of you know the exact date (or which week of which month) and will like to tell me.

Go go go, MIT Class of 2010!!!

MIT2010, you can find the answers to most of your questions on the MIT website. Do your research there first, and then come here to ask about anything you can't find, rather than asking others to do the research for you. These are mostly simple questions that can be answered easily in 5 minutes on the website: if I, a mere parent, can find the answers, I'll bet you can, too! :) (AND it will be good practice for next fall when you'll need to find things on the MIT websites for your daily survival.)

I recommend you begin at the "First Year" website for Class of 2010, which is designed to answer most of your questions just like this one. (It will be redesigned in another week, so don't be surprised when its look changes on you.) You can also start at the main MIT website and use the Search box, then bookmark the useful calendar and departmental pages you locate through that method, so you can refer to them in future. Good luck!

i'm very sorry of my laziness...i will do a search next time before asking simple questions like those. mootmom and others, again, i apologize for being too lazy to find the information myself.

3-day weekends... I think I heard my CPW hosts (I was in a double) refer to those as Suicide Prevention Days. Hah!

Helpful information about Orientation, registration, etc. can be found in Mollie's most recent blog entry. The blogs are usually highly valuable sources of information!

(BTW, MIT2010, I did not want to discourage you from asking questions here: it's not always easy to find answers to some questions, and these boards are helpful sources! Some answers are easier to find than others, though, and it's just good practice to get in the habit of sleuthing first.)

Just because I don't think next year's academic calendar is up yet -- the first three-day weekend is usually the third weekend in September.

The calendar as a whole goes something like this, generally speaking:
Last week in August -- rush/orientation
Tuesday after Labor Day -- Fall term registration day
Wednesday after Labor Day -- First day of fall classes
Third or fourth Monday in Sept -- Student holiday
Columbus Day weekend (2nd or 3rd in Oct) -- 4-day weekend
Veteran's Day weekend (1st or 2nd in Nov) -- 3-day wekeend
Thanksgiving -- 4-day weekend
Wednesday before exam week -- last day of classes
Two weeks before Christmas -- final exams
All of January -- IAP
First Monday in February -- spring registration day
First Tuesday in February -- first day of spring classes
Presidents Day weekend -- three-day weekend
Second or third week in March -- Spring Break
Second or third weekend in April (marathon weekend) -- 4-day weekend
Thursday before finals -- last day of classes
Third or fourth week in May -- final exams

...and yes, when you're a senior, you do know these things completely off the top of your head :D

or someone's jus smart =P
