When I say Northeastern, you say...?

I just want to get a general idea of what people think of this school.

my cousin went there and didn’t love it…don’t have much insight because I’ve never looked into it myself. They have a co-op program I think though? which is sort of a defining feature. To be honest, I say cold. to be fair I am from australia, but my cousin is from New Jersey and she took a semester off and went to LA because she couldn’t deal with the cold

i think safety for Boston University

A vocationally oriented school.

Northeastern has gotten very popular. Students like the coop program that gives them some work experience prior to getting out in the workforce. No longer is it a safety for BU.

@zobroward

why? Northeastern has a lower acceptance rate, higher applicant pool, and is set to outpace BU in the USNews rankings next year. can you elaborate?

I was accepted to both Northeastern and BU. I really don’t know which one to pick… BU has an awesome reputation but Northeastern is up and coming.

I think you mean that the other way around:

NEU: 1890-2170
-CR: 630-720
-M: 650-740
-W: 610-710
Acceptance rate: 32%

BU: 1780-2080
-CR: 570-670
-M: 610-720
-W: 600-690
Acceptance rate: 46%

Selectivity-wise, NEU is much closer to cross-city rival Boston College. I personally feel that NEU is an under ranked and somewhat under appreciate school. While the co-op is probably the best the country, I feel like it gives the school a “vocational” reputation, when it’s really just an excellent academic outlet.

NEU is a *very *different school now than it was 15 or 20 years ago! So the answer you will get depends on whether people are aware of NEU’s transformation.
It *used *to be the safety school for Boston area kids, and it was largely a commuter school. They were always known as pioneers in the co-op educational model and are still leaders.
So don’t assume anyone’s opinion is current, you need to do your own research. If you had asked me a few years ago before I started researching colleges for my son, I would have ranked it below BU, but not any more.
Here’s a good article…
http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2011/01/24/applications_to_northeastern_surge/

@hannahabbe

Have you visited both? My daughter didn’t even finish the tour of BU because she knew it wasn’t right for her. She wanted more of a “campus” feel with a little green space. She is now a freshman at Northeastern (communications major) and is very happy. BU is a great school but it’s not for everyone.

northwestern!

Northeastern is not a school for someone who wants to spend 4 years contemplating ideas and discussing theories. It is a school that will prepare you for the real world. You will be required to get off campus for 2 or 3 six month periods of experiential learning which is usually coop but could also be international study or research at the Harvard medical complex or many of the other research centers around Boston or beyond.

Check out the BU and NU streads on CC. Many students were accepted at BU but denied or waitlisted at NU in recent years.

NU is not that well known (yet) in the west. Then again, most east coasters still think of USC as a good football school.

Northeastern has gotten very “hot” lately.
If you are a high need family, it would not be a good choice, actually neither would BU.
We know families in our school district who needed a high percentage of their need met, and Northeastern and Boston University did not come through. Getting in and affordability go hand in hand.

On the other hand, sometimes BU or NEU offer significant merit awards to attract top students. I know someone who got close to a full ride (engineering) at BU, but got less at NEU. I think it varies a lot depending on how much they value that student.
Bottom line - if you are interested then apply, but don’t have great expectations for FA or merit aid because it is so variable.

I got a full ride to both so that aspect will not affect my decision.

Northwestern. Wait no! Not Northwestern, just school that looks like Northwestern that always gets me really confused when I misread the title.

So are you asking people to help you decide between bu and neu?

BeanTownGirl, that seems to be a problem for a lot of people

When I hear Northeastern, I immediately think about their strong co-op program. I think Northeastern is a very practical pre-professional school, great for those who have specific careers in mind.

Co-Op.
Only thing is that people might get it confused with Northwestern. But still seems to be a pretty good school.
