New Student Convocation is Wednesday 8/22. When can students move in to the dorms?
I think last year it was the day before convocation.
I should mention that you may wish to make your hotel reservations ASAP as the hotels near the campus book up quickly.
The only reason that it was that late last year was because of the eclipse. Typically it will be the weekend prior to the first day of classes. In 2015 my daughter moved in on a Saturday and classes did not start until Thursday. They do stagger the move-in as well. Some kids moved in on Friday, but the majority were moved in by the end of the day Saturday. Since classes start on the 23rd this year, move in will more than likely be on the 17th and 18th.
I second the hotel reservation suggestion. Go wide in the reservation, and narrow it down later. You won’t hear about move in day for a few months and by then, hotels will be near impossible to get.
Should be August 15th if your student is planning on participating in Rush.
@icedlatte2 Good point. Sorority rush occurs earlier than regular move in.
Yes eclipse was the reason for move-in being only a few days before class last year. If you call housing they might already know. Usually it has been weekend prior to class start. But it USC liked the way last year flowed it could be different this year.
I was told 8/21
as has been mentioned in other threads, some students move in earlier. Girls participating in sorority rush come in the week before, as do ROTC students and fall athletes.
Due to a Beyonce/Jay Z concert - and the associated traffic/hotel complications - falling on what was to be move in day, the university is still finalizing a new date. We were just at accepted student day yesterday, Apr 7, and were given this information during one of the orientation sessions.
@paparent106 , they announced tonight that move-in day is Monday, Aug 20
@x2018x where did you see that? Just curious.
@x2018x never mind. I saw it on Facebook and adjusted our reservation - good to go! Thanks for the heads up.
@x2018x thanks!
Is New Student Convocation something that parents typically attend? Because of @x2018x 's heads up, I was able to move up my hotel arrival by a day, to the 19th, but I’ve got us checking out on the 21st.
My kid is now a junior so info might be stale, but I think convocation is just for the students. There were no events for parents at or after drop-off my kid’s first year. We just parked, unloaded her stuff into a big laundry cart, moved the car to a nearby lot (I think they waive the parking fee during move-in) while she and other parent got the cart up to the room, helped her unpack a bit so we could take some of the packaging stuff home, and then we left. Took maybe an hour?
It’s only been a year and I can’t remember either. But I left immediately after unloading. There was a line of people waiting for your space. Your child will have dorm meetings and functions with their floor. Parents didn’t need to hang around. Anything that they find they need can be sent via Amazon.
The year my D moved in (current Junior), there was a luncheon for the Honor’s College families the next day (Sunday). We stayed the night and finished up a few odds and ends and left after the luncheon. I am not sure if they still do that or not.
Also, Family Weekend/Parents Weekend is Oct. 5-7 2018.
