When is the best time to ask teachers for recommandation letters?

My s is junior this year. Each teacher only write 30 recommandation letters for senior students. When is the best time to ask teachers for these? Thanks.

My d asked her teachers in late March or early April, I believe.

Thanks chedva.

At our hs, kids ask later in the junior year as well. But I don't think it's ever to soon to ask if the student already knows the teacher well. It can be an "I'd really like you to write one of my recommendations. Would you be able to? When would you like me to provide you the forms?" kind of thing, so the teacher doesn't feel it's premature.

If it someone from whom he's just now taking the first class, at the end of the semester would be another good time.

omigod

My S just got his to his teachers last week. They seemed ok about it though...

My son asked his physics teacher last June and his Latin teacher this fall, but he only got the paper work to the teachers week before last I think, which I thought was tight given that he has two early action applications.

bethievt - I think it's different at different schools. Not to worry. Our school seems to think it's helpful for the teachers to have the whole summer, when they are "free," to work on recs. However, I do believe the rec from S's favorite teacher was the last thing to float in to the GC office at the very last minute before app pkgs had to go out ;).

I asked my English teacher in May (junior year) and my chemistry teacher in September (senior year). I go to a small school, though, so the teachers here are less likely to be overburdened. If you know that a teacher is a popular choice for recs it would probably be a good idea to ask earlier.

At our school it's customary to ask in Sept of Senior year. However, GC said asking teachers in June of Jr year would be a great idea, give them the summer to do it. Also, if your favorite Jr year teacher leaves over the summer before you could ask them in the fall, you're out of luck.

Another vote for late junior year!

Bethie -- as usual, I think things are different here. My daughter asked in the first few weeks of school senior year. I'm sure some seniors haven't even asked yet. Heck, there are some top kids this year who still have no idea where they are applying.

My son asked in mid-September. This is the usual at our hs. The teachers also ask for a list of the schools and their due dates.

DD and DS asked for their recommendations in May of their junior years. They gave the teachers the names of the schools, their student profile (activities etc), asked the teachers if they could pick up the letters at the start of their senior years. In all cases the teachers were very happy with this arrangement and had their letters done by the first day of school. BUT my kids also knew their schools late in their junior year. Teachers also submitted their letters to the guidance department for any scholarships or last minute applications (both of my kids did one application at the 11th hour).

Thumper, Do you know what month those letters were dated? Does it matter?

At my high school the popular teachers/ones who wrote the best recs were booked well before the end of junior year... :(

The letters were dated August of the year when their senior year began.

Thanks thumper.

At ou rschool our teachers ask the students for an updated resume before they write the letters. Good idea to make sure they can speak to all the student doers that they may not be aware of.
