When it comes to evaluating my grades do colleges consider my holdbacks?

Hi CC, first post here so I don't know If I'm doing this wrong but here's my point anyway

So I got this brain tumor followed with a Meningitis ( practically an inflammation that's in your brain ) when I was finishing grade 9.

It was a terrifying moment; I literally had to sign a paper that says the doctors did their best to save my life and they hold no responsibility of my death. Physically the pain was like nothing I had in my life but whats worse is that I got kind of lethargic to everything ( like a pothead I guess ) since then.

Eventually my high school grades sucked. Some subjects like math or econ I got fairly an A or B's but others I barely passed. So the thing is my GPA in total is really under the chart.

So here's my scores basically :
I finished my sophomore year with a weighted 3.43 / unweighted 3.00 or something like that.

AP calculus AB 3 / AP physics B 3 / AP macroeconomics 4 ( comparably low from my peers )

my estimated SAT score is about 2000~2100 ( Math 780 / CR 620 / Writing 700 )

and I've heard that even I happen to be good in my standardized tests, with a low GPA nothing would really work.

I don't want to sound like I think I would get excused because of my illness but it is a fact for me.

Any chances of me getting to a decent high ranked college in the U.S?
And would colleges acknowledge the fact that I had trouble in the high school and would accept me?

PS I am interested in marine engineering or ocean engineering

Ask your counselor to mention the illness in their recommendation.

Have your grades improved? If you are a rising junior, do you anticipate having trouble with your grades this year as well?

@Hunt Hi thanks for posting. Devastatingly I am a rising senior ( Like written in the above I fininished my sophomore with a pretty bad score ). My socres tend to go higher from start but still, in average it is low. I am expecting straight A’s in my 1st quarter for my senior year.
