When notified for early admission?

Our son applied early admission to all of his schools, with applications due Nov 1, and most having notification dates of Dec 15. He did not apply early decision anywhere. Will schools wait until close to Dec 15 to send their notices, or can we expect decisions before then?

Here are the schools to which he applied (from reaches to safeties):
Carnegie Mellon
UofM Ann Arbor
Purdue
Case Western
Rose Hulman
Pitt
Michigan State

My son submitted his application to MSU a couple weeks early because his HS counselor said they get inundated with applications right at the deadline.

Our fantasy is to have all the notifications in and my son’s decision made before Christmas.

Thanks

Purdue notifies EA in mid January.

Here are a few dates I found, either per CC last year or the college website:

  • Rose 12/10
  • Case 12/21
  • Purdue 1/15
  • Michigan 2/1
  • Purdue Honors- end Feb

I won’t go down the whole list because it’s easily found on the admissions websites. In general, private colleges will release all decisions on the announced date. The exact date may (or may not) be a day or two earlier than what is posted now. Some public colleges may release in waves. But most top colleges will release nothing before mid-December. Also, not all colleges on your list say they will release be 12/15; e.g. UMich is end of January although waves may come out sooner.

Thanks all for the replies. I had already seen published dates on the various school websites. I was hoping to hear about when schools actually send notifications, not when they say they are going to send notifications.

Any change, if any, to their published dates will not be announced until close to the date. For now, assume any notification will not be before the date published.

Carnegie Mellon doesn’t offer early action. You’ll hear by April 1 for regular decision. Pitt offers rolling admissions and you’re likely to hear quickly about admission but you’ll need to wait on honors.

Purdue historically releases EA the day they tell you ; )

Honors college acceptances were earlier than expected in '18. I believe we only had to wait 2 or 3 weeks after acceptances to hear about Honors.

I know people whose kids have already been accepted at Pitt so that could be any time.

Michigan was the worst for our D because of the wave release. She was deferred EA on xmas eve, and then didn’t hear until way after she had already committed to Purdue. If I recall, it was actually AFTER ivy day.

Check what happened last year. Find the main post for each college and see when the decisions were released or started trickling in. That will give you an idea when to expect notifications regarding admission, honors college, and merit if applicable.

Based on (short) history, you”ll get a response from Purdue on 1/15, as they say you will.

An alternate approach shown by Penn State notified some students in 4-6 weeks, while others come closer to the December 24 date. I suspect it depends on the student’s qualifications.

Of my D22s eight EA applications, only one has notification committed by 12/15. Three have dates before 1/1-1/5 dates of RD applications. Five are into next year. Some say “on”, some say “by”.

Five years ago, Pitt notified my D17 within about a month (as did Purdue, as they used to be rolling). I suspect this is still the case.

CMU has only ED. So either December 15 or you applied RD and will hear in April. They have traditionally been strict on releasing only on the decision date.

I don’t have recent experience with the others.
