I'm moving quite far away for college in the fall, so I'm wondering when I should actually start planning, buying things, and setting them aside for college?

Now would be a good time. I’m sure there will be a lot of things you’ll need to buy for college. The sooner you get going, the better. Keep an eye on sales fliers and such to see when things are on sale. If you get things like appliances, furniture and such when they’re on sale, you can save a lot of money. It’s never too early to start getting a list of necessities together.

Yeah, the earlier you start the more you can spread out the cost and there are more sales to find. Though if you are going far away you won’t want to bring as much, especially if you’re flying there. There are good lists of what to bring on the internet and here on CC, look at some of them and add/remove things you know you can’t live without/won’t need.

If you are flying or otherwise need to bring as little as necessary to school, you are going to have to buy most of your stuff when you get there (like toiletries for example), but you can still probably buy a few things.

Start planning now- the sooner you start, the less likely you are to forget important things. The list pinned at the top of this forum is a great place to start your packing lists.

The larger stores started bringing out their dorm items this week - Target shelves are being stocked with dorm storage and various items and Bed/Bath/Beyond has brought out their TwinXL bedding, shower totes, popup hampers, etc. Target bedding is cheaper but doesn’t hold up as well in the wash. Check your local paper and the mail - BBB accepts expired coupons. Be careful not to overdo it - dorm room space is really limited and you need to make the most of every inch.
