When should I start packing for college? I move in August 12th and I'm going 4 hours away, so I can come home if necessary but prefer not to make the drive and probably won't make it very often.

The week you leave… even the day before… like normal people.

I packed steadily over the course of the summer. I bought a lot of stuff to take that I didn’t need at home so I packed that first. I packed most of my clothes the week I left, although I did wind up leaving a lot of summer clothes that I forgot in the dryer.

What, you haven’t started yet? LOL

I would begin creating a detailed list of everything you’re bringing. That way you’ll be able to go through what you have an what you need. I’d say in the end of July/early August start packing things you don’t need and the week of pack the things you’ll be normally using.

I packed (well, made endless lists) all summer for my son who didn’t pack until two days before…his way was probably better. Except for bedding, microwave (or any other big thing you know you’ll need), few kitchen supplies (if you cook) most everything else can be bought at a local wal-mart if available when you get there and figure out what you REALLY need.

I honestly started packing my clothes the day before (all it was just throw the things in the closet into a bag) and my mom was steadily buying stuff the week before. She just threw all those things on the living room floor. Then the day of, we didn’t even put those things in a bag. We just threw it in the car and left. I only had one bag when I was packing up to return back home lol. It sucked x.x

And yes, it was my school backpack.

Just make sure you clean your clothes before you go so you dont leave any behind!

“What, you haven’t started yet? LOL”
loooool

I started packing the week before because I had to pack up my entire room: some came with me to college, some went into storage, some was given away, some went into the trash.

If you can leave the rest of your room as-is, packing the day before should be fine.

I put away some stuff that I didn’t need until I got to college, but as for clothing, I packed it all up the night before. If you pack any earlier, you’re going to arrive at college with already dirty clothes and who wants to get somewhere and have to do laundry? I probably stayed up until 3 am and was worried that it wouldn’t all fit in my car. I maybe almost had a panic attack. lol

But it all fit. Barely.

I’d say if you’re at Wal-Mart/Target/etc, then take a look around and if you see something that you need or could use and it’s a decent price, buy it and put it away. Leave most of your packing for 1-3 days ahead though since you’ll be driving. It’s completely different if you have to ship things.

I’ve started slowly buying/packing since winter. My shopping list was pretty long and most of things I had no use for at home. I just put the things I bought in storage containers that I plan on using in college. For my clothes, I plan on packing the week before and washing the clothes I wore that week the night before.

I am still unpacking from when I came back from school.

Right now. Do it right now.

JK. I always pack the day before but have most things in a general area. Then again, I never really UNPACK to begin with.

Freshman year I started packing like 3 weeks in advance. Sophomore year I packed the day before, and this year I packed the day before. But a week is plenty of time if you’re a freshman and trying to figure out what all you need etc.

I’m also entering my freshman year. I’ve started looking for bedding sets and other permanent things I’ll need so I can find a good deal by the end of the summer. But I’m probably going to sort through my stuff a week or so before I leave, and pack 2 or 3 days before. Just remember to leave your heavy winter stuff at home until later.

I’d start buying stuff now… and if you’re a guy, you have less to buy (:

Honestly I was not hyped or excited to go to my university (parents cajoled me into applying there), so I didn’t pack till like 3 days later (My mom was more excited than me). It is no big deal, you can just pick whatever you miss during vacations/or buy at the school store.

Party hard, young one.
