I leave in 28 days! Yes, I'm counting lol. I already bought my bedding, shower caddy, bath towels, and 2 storage bins. I know I still need to buy a few more things plus look at what I already have from home. I'll be moving 4.5 hrs away from home. So it won't be too easy coming home whenever I please. Plus I wont have a car. When is a good time to pack?

I’m in a similar situation as you (except I’m an international). I’ve done maybe half of all of my shopping and certainly haven’t started packing yet. I think three or four days before you move out is fine. That’s what I’m planning, anyway. But there’s no harm in starting earlier if it makes you more comfortable.

Now. You need to get all things together before it’s too late.

Yeah you should start now. I move into my dorm in about 20days and I’m practically already packed up.

I’d say if you have things that you bought specifically for school and don’t plan on using now, you should put them in one area to make sure you don’t misplace them. Other stuff though, three or four days should be good then you aren’t looking for stuff to use and its all boxed up. You also may want to make a list of what you plan on bringing, then you have time to think about things you may have forgotten and things you realized you don’t really need

My mom and I went shopping at Bed Bath and Beyond about a month before I moved into the dorms. Once at the school, we picked up the supplies and drove them to my dorm. I started packing about a week before I left for college, but that was primarily because I had to ship things over since I was moving across the country for school. When I transferred to my new school I started packing the day that I needed to move out.

Do this.

This is what we’re doing. We have an entire room devoted to dorm items.

I’m not packing until maybe a week or a couple days before I leave.

I started packing about a month before my move-in date. I kept it to dorm-specific stuff the first couple weeks, and gradually started packing stuff that I was bringing from home based on what I wouldn’t be using much for those last couple of weeks.

Incidentally, it took us three car loads to get everything to the dorm. I don’t know whether that’s because we have a small-ish sedan, I’m a heavy packer, or some combination of both. That will depend on the person, of course.

Now feels way too early! Though I’m excited enough to want to I agree that you should put whatever you bought for college in one place so you don’t misplace anything. Also, like others have suggested, making lists of what to buy, what to take and what you will buy once you get there is a good idea.

Don’t forget tht BB&B has that registry service where you’re able to reserve items at a nearby BB&B. Extremely helpful and you can reserve anything you want. When you get to the store you can decide if you really want to buy it or not. Plus, it saves a great amount of car space.

My kids pack in the last few days. But, well in advance, they think about what they really want and need- the personal care items, their favorite shampoo, an extra bottle of something, some piece of clothing to complete an outfit, better rain boots, tissues, cold medicine, batteries, light bulbs, whatever- and look at sales or check when they are out. Lots of families do the “WalMart run” before the parents leave. But you don’t want to be caught with too much last minute or forgetting. Or stuck paying a higher price on campus.

Buy what you need now, pack 3-5 days before.

lol to packing right now.

Things that you bought specifically for school that you currently aren’t using and won’t be using until you get to school should be put away. I know some people choose a corner in their living room or an unused room in their house to put stuff like that. That’s a really good idea.

Think of a list of things you need/want to take and write that down. As you think of items over the next few weeks, add them to the list.

Start the actual packing process 3-5 days before… maybe a week, but no more than that.

If you pack too early, you’ll end up needing things that you’ve already packed and/or you’ll forget what you’ve already packed and it’s just a bigger mess. You also won’t be as familiar as where everything is once you actually get to your dorm room and try to unpack.

My freshman year, I pretty much did 90% of my packing the night before and it was fine.

Ha! I bought the bulk of my dorm supplies two days before moving in for freshman year and I packed the day before! I had most of my stuff, but I (along with most of the freshman class) had go to Walmart to pick up some other items.

I’m a sophomore now and I have 21 days until move in day. I now work for the university, so I get to move in a couple days before all the other students, which is SUPER NICE! I am reusing most of my supplies from last year, so I am going through all my previous supplies to see what I need. I pretty much just need to buy some office supplies and nursing equipment. I probably wont pack until a day or two before I move in. I pack my stuff in reusable containers, so I just stack them in my SUV and go. Easy peasy!

One tip for you… You don’t have to get all of your stuff now. Get the essentials now and you can buy the other stuff when you get moved into your dorm. That way you don’t have to haul everything at once!

I haven’t even bought anything yet, let alone start packing.

I’ll probably buy everything this weekend and next and then start packing the weekend before I leave.
