Hi everyone,
I have an alumni interview today at a local Starbucks and I have a question. Is it appropriate to arrive early and to work on homework at Starbucks for a couple of hours before the interview? I like to get my homework done there anyway, so this would be convenient. Do you think this is looked down upon? Would it make a bad first impression? I was thinking of just cleaning up all of my work 5-10 minutes before I expect my interviewer to arrive.

10 mins before.

Yes, 10 minutes before. You can check your phone or something while waiting.

But I don’t think doing homework would be frowned upon, do you?

I suggest – and I have conducted Duke alumni interviews for many years – being engaged in homework is likely to be unnoticed and is near-certain to have no influence (positive or negative).

I wouldn’t see anything wrong with it at all. I wouldn’t see anything wrong if you still had a book open, as long as you stayed aware of your surroundings.
