I have not registered for classes yet, but I am planning to do so soon.
Should I buy the book right now and where can I find the required books for each of the classes that I will take? I do not think SIS has it on there. UVA Bookstore does for each class, but I am not sure they are correct, because some are N/A or optional. Just wanted to clear things up.

I found you could usually buy new books on Amazon cheaper than used books at the UVa bookstore. There are some classes such as the first year comm school class where the “book” is a set of readings that you cannot buy on Amazon.

Many courses need a computer code for online work, in addition to the book. The computer code cannot be reused. Therefore, it was often easiest to buy a new book from Amazon with the computer code attached. Sometimes you can buy the computer code separately, which often came with a CD.

The UVa bookstore website often listed items as a package price, or as separate items. Be sure you don’t misinterpret that listing and end up buying duplicates. Also, some items are listed on that website as optional for a class.

The best priced offers on slightly used books on Amazon go fast. You can search by ISBN number, which makes it easier to find the right book and the right edition.

Don’t buy a book until you are 99% sure you are going to take the class. In a perfect world, you would get started on the reading over the summer, to reduce the stress once classes start.

Second year students sell books on the official UVa class of 2015 facebook page - many are for classes typically taken by first years. Anyone can read that facebook page.

Anyone with a college email address can sign up for a free Amazon student account. That provides free 2 day shipping for an initial period of time (I think 6 months).

Do not purchase any books now since you have not registered for classes yet. Once you register only order the books you know 100% you are taking those courses. After your schedule has all the courses you know you will take then order the remaining books you will need.

charlie summed it up in his post on how/where to order.

One other note. If you order from UVa (only if you cannot get it cheaper from Amazon or Barnes and Noble) you can pick them up from the bookstore and pay with your student id. Your student account is then charged with no additional fees and you can pay from a quik pay account.

Thank you!

I always waited until after classes started and I knew I wouldn’t add/drop anything and then ordered everything used on Amazon…

I would recommend going to the first class before buying books, just in case you do not get a good vibe or do not like what you are hearing. I would also recommend using amazon…even though I was really lazy and just used the bookstore. With a free amazon student account you can get free two day shipping for six months.
