I'm always worrying about college and it's driving my mom crazy. She hates to talk about it and is extremely stubborn. I was wondering if, as a sophomore, it's too early to think about what I should major in?

It’s never too early to start thinking. It’s probably too early to -decide-, but exploring interests and possible career paths as a sophomore isn’t that early, especially if you want to apply to a specific program at a school (engineering, culinary arts, journalism) once college app time comes around. If you know your interests by then you can narrow down the types of schools you want to apply to. I’d be much more worried about putting it off too long.

It’s not too early to think about things, or plan for some things that are under your control now (such as your grades and course selection), but it is too early to worry and obsess which isn’t helpful or useful in so many ways (such as hurting your relationship with your mom and the support you will need from her or coming up with premature plans that blind you to other possibilities).

You should have a general idea of your major by the time you start looking at colleges. You wouldn’t want to waste your time looking at LACs if you want to be an engineer, for example.

Of course, as soon as possible. Just try not to lock yourself into thinking you’re going to major in a certain subject without actually trying it out in college.
