I'm a rising junior and just completed Chem. I Honors. I'll be taking AP Chem in junior year. Should I take the SAT II Chemistry exam after completing AP Chem or is the AP material different from SAT II: Chem I.

Definitely take AP chem before you take the test. You'll have a much easier time. AP chem is general chemistry. Which is what is covered on the sat 2 test.

I'd say wait until you take AP chemistry, but not because it's easier to take it after AP. I only say that because you'd have to wait a few months after you ended the course. I took it after honors chem and got a very good score.

Has anyone who actually took it after AP Chem gotten a very good score? Many of my friends plan to take it before AP Chem. I dont feel secure taking SAT II Chem. after taking AP Chem. I feel as if the SAT II material might be different from AP Chem.

Don't worry, you can take it without AP; in fact, if you apply AP thinking to this test you'll probably not do too well...85 questions in 60 minutes = quick thinking and total recall of facts. I didn't take AP Chemistry, and I didn't start studying for the June test until mid May and I got a 790...the practice tests (especially kaplan's and baron's) overprepare you for the real thing.

I would suggest you take it during the same week you take your AP Chem tests. You will be very focused on Chemistry and whichever test comes first will help you on the second one. You will learn more Chemistry than you know now and that cannot hurt. You could take it twice. My daugther went from a 560 to a 780 on Chem doing this. 5 on AP Chem. Clearly the Honors Chem course didn't cover all the mateiral on the SAT II. Your school's syllabus may be different.

I really appreciate the feedback.
However, I'm getting contradictory responses. All of you but bloodandiron recommended taking SAT II Chemistry after completing AP Chem. Will I do well on SAT II Chemistry if I take it after the AP Chemistry course? Or will the AP Chemistry material be different from SAT II Chemistry? Will I forget all the basics if I took AP Chem before taking SAT II Chem? Thanks

I say take it after completing AP Chemistry. I see that you'd be taking the SAT II in October, which means you would probably have to do some reviewing/relearning because of summer vacation. Why not wait until after taking AP Chemistry, which will only reinforce what you have already learned? AP Chem isn't much different from general chemistry in my opinion. I took the SAT II Chem a month after the AP exams without much review and I got a 790.

It depends on how good your school's regular chem program is. Get the Princeton Review book-- it's very concise and covers ALL the material necessary. If you are confused about a decent amount of the stuff in the book, then wait to take it after AP Chem (in my case, we didn't cover equilibrium, kinetics, and an in depth look at acids and bases until AP Chem, so I would have done poorly if I took it after regular chem), but if you covered most of the material, then you don't really need to wait. I would say use PR and do the practice tests, use Sparknotes free tests, and any other practice tests you can get your hands on-- they are your best friends. Especially with the relationship analysis questions. I got a 750 doing all of the above.

Well, my teacher went halfway between AP and regents, and she taught 80% of what was on the test lol so maybe if you don't feel confident enough in your teacher, wait to take it.

wow admanrich, your regular course must suck (no offense, no one's fault but the system). Our regents course outlines are very basic (and pathetic) and they cover equilibrium and kinetics.

I think the AP/SAT II relationship can be seen better in AP Physics B, world history, and US history than any other test, but that's just me.

My friend informed that there is a bubble on the SAT II Chem test that inquired what science course he is taking or has taken, AP Chem or Honors Chem. Will this have any affect on college admissions?

No those questions are just for statistical purposes.

thanks
that is awesome news

Take it after you have prepared for the AP test. Be sure you take practice tests, though, so you know what to expect. I took the SATII Chem the weekend before the AP test with only a couple days' review and knowledge from the AP course. I ended up with a 790 and a 5 on the test, so don't worry too much.

you really don't HAVE to be in AP Chem....like I said it depends on how you can do it.

after ap chem. since u have an AP around ur belt it will be a lot easier when u walk in than walking in with honors chem

I would definitely take it after AP Chem. 800 SAT II and very confident about AP score. Some of the questions seemed almost identical.
