I knew two kids who got a 1560 and 1580 on the old SAT in 7th grade lol.

I took the PSAT my sophomore year (I'm a rising sophomore) and did average on it (188), although this was without any test prep or studying. I'm not taking any SAT courses this summer, although when school starts I'm taking free SAT Reading Prep at the NY Historical Society. (If you live in NY, they offer free classes to high school students. There's only one SAT class, and the others are history/art classes that are very interesting and look great on an app.)

It seems like everyone is using this summer to start prepping, and it makes sense. Anyway- I bought the official CB SAT Study Guide and have started reading it, and I also bought a PSAT guide (Kaplan) that I think is really bad quality (they used "waist" where it was supposed to be "waste", as in waste time), but it's too late now.

My strategy:
1. Learn the tips from the guides. Don't necessarily learn them by heart, but just try to apply them, and if it's helpful, great, but if it's not, it's not important to remember them.

Take practice tests. I'm trying for one a week...

Develop a challenging summer reading list. Start reading the New Yorker, The Economist, The New York Times, etc. regularly (if you don't already).

Review the math concepts, which are actually pretty basic, but easy to forget or confuse.

Never. Don't even take the test, it's stupid.

Yeah. I definitely got my first SAT prep material when I was in 3rd grade. The really sad thing is, I thought it was fun. lolol.

I'd recommend 10th grade if you're completely unfamiliar with the format. Take the PSAT. Get a good gauge on how you're sizing up with everyone else. I mean really, if you read a lot and have caught up with your math, you'll do fine.

The summer before junior year is a good time to start.

I studied for one month before the test and went from a 212 PSAT / 2110 Mock SAT to a 2350 SAT in about 4 weeks of intensive prep. IT CAN BE DONE...if you know what you are doing.

Some of you people are just weird, it's not necessary to fricken study for the SAT as a freshman or in middle school. Oh man. I'm just amused by this.

just start studyin at the end of summer going into junior year....thats what i plan on doing...don't over study for it....if ur smart u will do good and if ur not well then its not worth the trouble :)....i agree with Greendayfan.......... there is no point of studying for it for it a year or more before u take the test

start studying in 6th grade. that will give you plenty of time to memorize most of the questions they have ever used, and some base essays you can lightly change to fit any question.

or do what i did and don't prep for it at all(aside from taking the psat twice at school, which was required), go out the night before and wake up 20 minutes before the test having no idea where you are. and still get a score that fits into the CC upper bracket, and a 12 on the essay

i'm starting now(rising sophomore) nothing to complicated just Official Sat Question of the DAy (i agree it really helps), Peterson's Word of the Day, and since my school gives the online course on college board for free (i do it every once in awhile)

Just start a couple months before you take the test, and take the PSAT 10th and 11th grade in the fall. The most difficult parts to memorize are vocabulary and grammar usage (if you weren't taught how to use adavnced grammar at some point). For those, if you're really unsure about them, just read a lot and learn some roots, starting maybe a year before if you do a few minutes when you wake up every day (ie Question of the Day).

And do yourself a favor, if you're this worried about the SAT, take the ACT. 2 different kinds of tests, both accepted at the same colleges, and given the same value in the application process (some will even take your ACT Composite in lieu of Subject Tests).

People that say to start that early are ridiculous. My best sitting was 2380 and 2400 for best of each section and i started studying about 2 months before the test...you either know it or you don't.
