And what should you do to start?

If your really want to do well, start in 7th grade. I was taking Alegbra I then, so I knew the majority of the math on the test. Take the MATS (Midwest Academic Talent Search) in 7th and 8th grade, and then study like crazy from 9th to 11th. It sounds like a lot of work, but it'll pay off when you get 2300+.

I started the SAT Question of the Day in August of my freshman year; it's helped immensely.

I'm starting preping now (rising sophomore) and I don't plan to take it for a REALLY long time. I just want to be as prepared as possible.

I started practicing using a book about three or four months before I took it in 11th grade.

I've haven't prepared at all yet, and I'm a rising senior (although I have taken it twice without any preparation). I've been putting it off so far this summer, but I hope to start soon.

I did a few practice tests the week before. 2320 baby.

Or you could have a life? :P

Honestly, that's a dumb idea. Just wait until 11th grade, prep for a month or more, and take the test.

I'd say to take the PSAT your sophomore year. See how you score, and if the score is around 20 points or more away from the score you want, create a study plan.

I ended up taking the SAT again at the end of my sophomore year, and for it, all I did was skip school the day before and prep for it. I took a practice test in an environment similiar to that of the test day, and then I went over all the questions. I also used the practice test from collegeboard.

I would suggest not using any company produced practice tests (like kaplan or Princetonreview, or barrons) as they aren't as close to the test as collegeboard tests are.

Start at grade 7? I don't think I even knew what SAT was at that time. The only 'preparing' I'm doing is the SAT Question of the Day everyday. PSAT sounds like a good idea. Can you do it online?

If you're like me, you start studying the night before the test. Whoopsies.

In all seriousness, though, I think that most people I know started studying the summer before junior year. Some also took SAT prep classes... but all of them ALSO agreed that the class didn't help at all.

2 months.

anything beyond that and your just constantly refreshing what you're forgetting.

As soon as possible. Try taking the test in middle school. That way
(1) if you get a good score, you don't have to do it again
(2) if you get a crappy score, you can prepare more for it later.

Either way, you'll be a lot less stressed in junior year when you have harder classes and 853532 extracurriculars.

Plus you'll know where you stand.

In middle school you're almost guaranteed to get a average/bad score since most people don't already know the required mathematics...

I started 8th grade, it's good to take the test in 8th grade after studying like hell so you know where you are. + in 8th grade, you have like no work to do
=)

never, take the ACT.

^^ I looked at some of the practice questions on actstudent.org and the question seem EXTREMELY easy compared to the SAT. The math and science sections seem easier. Probably math seems easier because I just finished precalc.

Gotta start when you're born. ;)

On a more serious note, it's really not necessary to begin prepping for the SAT in junior high, but it's a good idea to take the test in seventh or eighth grade to get a feel for where you stand, even though that isn't an indication of how you'll do in high school.

Armando-
I agree that the math is pretty tough for people who take it early. I'll be a sophomore next year in high school and I don't even know half of the math they have on the SAT Question of the Day...

Where do you actually take the test though guys? :/

 Where do we take it? Um... I took it at the high school in the next town over, on the mainland. Or at the community college there.
