I’m currently a senior in American High School (But a Canadian dual citizen) with a 3.95 unweighted GPA & a 34 ACT. I’m interested in majoring in economics in the faculty of management. I meet all the admissions requirements but one, the A- requirement in prerequisite math. At my high school pre-calculus is broken up between two classes, trigonometry and analysis. I got a B+ in trig and an A in analysis. I talked to my trig teacher and she said she will change my grade in trig to an A- if I finish with A in Calculus (I am confident I can achieve), which I am currently taking. I understand that applications are open on the 15th and typically will have a better time getting admitted if I apply early, but I won’t have the A in trig until the end of December. Do I apply once applications open or wait until my grade in trig is changed?
First of all, congrats, those are stellar grades. Applications opened September 1st however, I don’t believe there is really any benefit in applying super early (unless you scored a 36 ACT and perfect GPA in which case you might hear earlier than most). For most students, they will likely want to see your December transcript regardless. So in my opinion, you can apply now if you want to get it in, but it is probably best to wait before you send in your supporting documents rather then have to amend your transcript later. Note they do not accept composite ACT scores. But if you really want to be certain, you can call and speak with Admissions, they are pretty friendly and willing to answer your questions as best as they can.
McGill admits from the top down, accepting students with the highest stats first. Date of submission of application has no bearing on the decision.
Not sure what you mean by this.
@TomSrOfBoston Sorry if I did not use the correct terminology, I meant they do not “super score”. You have to submit your best ACT composite that will address the minimum subsection requirements for the faculty you are applying. For example if you score a 33 ACT but your Math was a 27, that would be below what they typically accept for entering in the Science Faculty. You can retake the ACT and increase your Math score, but you need to resubmit the entire ACT (done in one sitting) with all 4 subsections. I hope that makes sense?
First, congrats on excellent stats!
Desautels is very challenging to get into. You’ll want that updated grade. I would say that if you will have the grade changed in December on your transcript I would consider waiting. Overall, your numbers look good. (Truth…I don’t know where the numbers ended up last year.)
You should also apply for Economics in the Faculty of Arts. You are way above the minima and will definitely get in. My son is an Economics major (and on the board this year for the Economics Student Association). He’s been really pleased with the rigor of the economics classes.
Best of luck!
My son is in Desautels. He is, overall, enjoying his time in McGill, but don’t know if “pleased” would be the word to describe his experience with the rigor. Challenging would be the most polite word…the rest would have four letters.
As the bar for admissions rises higher year over year, so does the curve to maintain the B- average(or whatever).
