When to Apply

I will complete by standard XII by 2014 and may plan to go to USA that year. I am giving SAT in 2013. Can you all help on how does the admission process take place? When should I start applying to universities? And From whom should I get The Recommendation letters as I currently donot have any counsellor

You should apply in fall 2013 for entry in fall 2014. Most schools ask for 2 LORs from teachers and a Counsellor LOR. If you don’t have a Counsellor, ask your Principal/Head Master.

So I was in a CBSE school till my class 10th and now in a state board college. I have a very good and Clean record of 10 years in my school. So The LOC should be from my school or college?

The letter should be from your state board college. Not the CBSE school.

Okay…Thanks for your reply!

“”"US college and university applications are a lot more similar than they first look!

A US university application can be one of life’s great mysteries, especially to students without friends or siblings who have already applied to a US college.

What does a US university application look like? (The answer: Scarier than it actually is.)

And how much do applications vary between US universities? (The answer: They are pretty much the same, with slight variations.)

Know what to expect when you start printing a US university application and your task will be even easier!

Before You Look at a US University Application

Before downloading a dozen or more US college or university applications, be aware that two forms are of particular interest.

First, the Common Application is now used by more than 300 schools throughout the US. Second, the Universal College Application has more than 50 subscribers.

By looking at either of these two forms, you will get an idea of what to expect from virtually every US university application.

You can decide to apply using the Common or Universal application, but first check to make sure they are accepted by the colleges and universities to which you want to apply.

Why Are US University Applications So Thick?

When you print a US university application and see page after page sliding out, you may wonder how you will have time to fill out a single application, let alone one for each college you are applying to.

Don’t worry! Much of an application’s bulk consists of fact-based blanks to fill in, such as your date of birth and the school you attended. It doesn’t take very long.

Another big section needs to be filled out by the teachers or counselors you have chosen to recommend you. There also are sections for athletes, artists, applicants who are home-schooled — in other words, there is a lot of stuff that you won’t have to worry about.

US University Application Essays

The section of US university applications that probably requires the most thought is the writing section.

It usually consists of a short answer and longer personal statement. It may not take up much space in the application form, but the admissions essay will loom large in the minds of the admissions committees who want to know more about you than just your grades.

Even if you are using the Common or Universal application, many schools also will require some sort of additional, school-specific material, usually an essay.

Carefully Review Your US University Application

You are usually required to do something in most sections of your university application, even if it is simply entering personal data, such as your name or date of birth. Each school also will have its own financial aid form.

Make sure your application isn’t missing information that should have been entered. Colleges won’t look at your application until everything they need has been received. Submitting a sloppy application may even hinder your chances of getting accepted.

The best way to be organized is to look carefully at every section and make sure you are not overlooking anything.

Now that you have a better idea of what is expected when you fill out a US university application, you are ready for the next step.

Filling out a college application still takes time, effort and a lot of care. But taking a good look at the application beforehand will prepare you to put your best self forward.“”“”“”

And more of what I read and would like to share with you

""""Admissions for International Students

US colleges & universities have similar requirements for students from other countries.

International students (like all students) have specific admissions requirements at colleges and universities in America.

Many of these requirements, however, are similar from college to college. International students should expect to submit specific documents and test scores with their US university application.

Like what?

Documents Needed by International Students

International students must provide many US colleges and universities with records and recommendations from previous schools they attended. This may include:

academic transcripts
degrees
lists of completed courses
If these records are in a language other than English, many colleges and universities will ask international students to provide a certified translation.

International students also may be asked to provide proof of their ability to pay tuition and other college-related costs, or the ability of a sponsor to pay tuition.

Tests for International Students

Many of the tests international students must take before they are admitted to a college or university are the same tests American students must take.

The SAT and ACT are requirements for nearly all students who seek an undergraduate degree in the US. These tests are offered around the world.

Some schools also request SAT II Subject Test scores. SAT II tests are offered in specific subjects such as chemistry, English literature and US history.

English Proficiency by International Students

International students whose native language is not English often must take an English proficiency test before they attend a US college or university. Two popular proficiency tests are the TOEFL and IELTS.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is accepted by more than 6,000 institutions in the US and abroad.

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is accepted by hundreds of colleges and universities in the US and most institutions in the rest of the English-speaking world.

Some institutions accept either a TOEFL or IELTS score, but others prefer a specific test. They also may accept other indicators of your English proficiency, such as minimum scores on the:

English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT)
Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
Advanced Placement International English Language test (APIEL)
SAT critical reading section
ACT English section
college or university’s intensive English program
.
.
Admissions requirements for both international students and students from the US vary slightly from college to college. Always check the specific requirements of any colleges or universities you want to attend!""""""""""""""
