When to take SATs and APs

I am took the world history SATII in my Sophomore year after a year of ancient cibvilization and a year of modern world history. I bought the Barrons book and the Kaplan book and scored a 780! I was pleased and even though no one in my school took it i did very well. Your son sounds like a history buff like me so i would encourage him to take it. Just buy a book that fills in the holes in his knowledge.

My daughter took 3 APs her junior year. Scores: 3 in Chem, 4 in American History and 5 in English. She could have taken more in her freshman and sophomore years, but didn't.

Those were the scores on every college application she submitted.

She got into Yale, class of 2006. She's not an athlete or movie star, either.

Honest. Her mediocre performance on APs was not a factor.

Just my opinion, but PR is ten times better than Kaplan. PR's tests are much closer to the real thing. PR students said that they were well prepped for the new SAT in March, if anything over prepared as the exam wasn't as hard as was being expected. This is also the opinion of my kid's tutor. He has been in the business for over 20 years and is a certified teacher in math, chem. physics, and K-12. Just thought you would want to know!

After not taking any SAT I's or II's before my junior year, I'm finding myself just registering for everything possible.

Bump......

for the people graduating in 2007, which subjects for satll is a requirement......

I really wish that I took SAT II World History after I took AP Euro in sophmore year. My school doesn't offer AP science courses until senior year, so I also regret not taking the SATII Chem last year also, since I felt strong in that area and that I could learn the extra material easily. A year later, it's hard to dust off all the old books and in a sense, relearn everything you've been taught.
Take SATIIs in preferably June, since May usually coincides with APs. It really depends on the person.
Take Math IIC, unless you haven't finished pre-calculus curriculm... and take a humanities/language and a science along with math.. so no matter which college you apply to, your SAT IIs should be okay.
If you do very poorly in all sciences, try a language and a history.. or if you're not so great in the humanities, try Literature. but CCers shouldn't have a problem. Demonstrate your strengths, but make sure you can also meet the testing requirements of the colleges that you are applying to.

I know people keep reiterating this-- but take the exams in June! I took AP US His my Freshman year and didn't know about SAT II requirements at most colelges. I found this out over the summer of my Freshman year and decided to take the SAT II for US His in Novemeber, which would give me enough time to review everything that I had joyously forgotten after taking the AP exam. Basically, although I got a 5 on the AP exam, I ended up with a measly 740 on the SAT II. I know that if I had taken it back in May/June, I would have surely done better.

Map- In the case of AP World History, I do not fully agree with what Acacia said about AP tests being more detail oriented.

I took the AP World History test last year and let me assure you, it is focused on trends and basic skills (techniques in writing essays). I recieved a 5 on that test with general world history trends and concepts in my mind.

If your so self-studies the AP test, SIGN UP FOR THE SAT WORLD HISTORY (I believe the one in June is right after the AP test?) Keep in mind though that this SAT test asks for DETAILS.
My biggest regret is not taking the SAT World Hisory-- its been 6 months now and I have to brush up on my facts if I plan to take it in June.

AP World History is known to be one of the easier AP tests. It is the perfect one to start your son's AP life? in.

It really, really depends
I regret not taking math iic at the end of precalc last year because I took the SAT Is too late.. I'm also upset I never took bio at the end of the honors course sophomore year, and I regret ever taking the spanish SAT IIs (language tests tend to be brutal, imho)

but what I would say, is look at the school's program... my school has sort of a set of recommendations for every test (ie: we'll help you prep for this test, but not that). I should have followed these suggestions... That seems to work better for most people I know than self study, but it really depends on how good you are at picking A, B, C, or D, and how much motivation you have to self-study. and the SAT II in us history seems to be easier than the world one, from what people have said? but who knows.

Is it a good idea to take SAT Physics and US History in May right after preparation for the APs?

For Canadians, do we take it after Grade 11?

SAT World History is a pretty easy test. If you took AP Euro, dont just waltz into the SATII WH like i did becuase you will fall on your face (4 on AP, 520 on WH).

But heres all i did for prep.
Bought the barons WH book. (300ish pages) Read it two times in two weeks (didnt bother taking any practice tests), hitting over anything that i forgot or that seemed umfamiliar. Took the test senior year and got a 730. Its fairly easy but has lots of names/dates. If you can push through material (no matter how boring!) quickly then you can do fine on it whenever.

Great advice! Read by yourself.

quick question here: do you take AP tests after taking each AP class? Or can you just sign up for the exam if you believe you are able to do well on the exam?

There is no requirement from College Board that you take a AP class before taking the AP exam. You are allowed to self-study the material if you so choose. Check with your school on their policy about this - while most will let you take exams, some will not want you to take the exam because it risks lowering their average score. Also, even if your school or state subsidizes AP exam fees, you might have to pay full price ($82?) if you don't take the class - if depends on school and state policy.

I will be taking 3 APs exam this May ie US History, English and Chemistry.
I planned on taking the SAT1 for the first time this April 1.

Which is a better schedule?
1) April SAT1, May SAT1 again, June 3 subject Tests (Math 2c,Chemistry and USHistory)

or
2) April SAT1, May USHistory Subject Test (Saturday , right after AP US History), JUne 2 Subject Tests( Math 2c & Chemistry)

October will be for retake for any SAT1 either or Subject Tests to be in time for Early Decision/Action.

i dont know about the sat subject test, but the ap world exam is fairly easy. last year we had a new teacher and pretty much learned nothing, we didn't even finish 75% of the textbook...all i did was read the barrons and i passed with a 3
