When to take the SAT and ACT

I'm a current high school sophomore and have not yet taken the SAT or ACT, when should I?

Perhaps you should determine which test is a better match for your natural abilities, prepare for that test over the summer, and post a score in the fall. The ACT is offered in early Sept., whereas the SAT is administered in early Oct.

If you prepare for the Oct. SAT, you’ll essentially get a 2-for-1. You’ll be very ready for the PSAT in mid-October. Lots of students in your shoes position themselves for National Merit Scholar consideration by doing this.

My suggestion is to finish taking SAT1 and/or ACT by April of Junior year, then leave May for AP and June for subject tests. In order to complete SAT1 and/or ACT by April including 1 retake, you may want to take the first one by January so that you will have some time to prepare in case you need to retake them in March or April. If necessary, you may take it once more in Fall that it is still in time for EA/ED. Hopefully, you don’t need a third attempt of any test so that you can focus on essays, school visits, and applications in the Summer before Senior. If you just have 1 attempt by April, it is still okay as you can always retake ACT in June that has no conflict with SAT2, although you may not have time to prepare for the retake. If you don’t have any score by May, you will be running out of time or chance for retake.

Currently I’m a Junior, so far I was not thinking about going for ACT. I have given 2 SATs and subject tests so far and planning on taking one more SAT in Oct 2013 in my Senior year. I’m thinking most of SAT study will be helpful for ACT. What do you guys think about taking ACT in December?

bella1234, it would not hurt to take ACT in December if for RD. However, it would be a lot easier if you take it in early Fall right after preparation over the summer and before finals in school. There is no time conflict between SAT and ACT.
