When transferring can I chose not to transfer the credits?

I’ve done two years at one university, my grades are good. When transferring to another school, I know I have to show my transcript from my first college. I have no problem doing this because my grades are fine. But what if I don’t want to transfer a lot of the credits? Can I chose which courses/credits to transfer over? Additionally, most colleges allow you to transfer no more than 60 credits. So if I have >60 credits, does that mean I can’t transfer, or just that not all my credits will transfer?

Check the policy of each college. Some colleges allow subject credit for all transfer course work that is accepted, even if your credits are capped at 60 or whatever.

No you can not choose. But all your credits may not transfer. Each college evaluates your courses and lets you know which ones they’ll accept and whether they’ll be allocated to specific gen Ed requirements or as generic credits that apply towards your graduation total.

Check the policy regarding credits at each school you’re interested in attending. It’s possible if you have too many that you’d be precluded from applying. Most if not all colleges require transfers to be on campus for a minimum of 4 semesters. If you have enough credit to be a junior but want sophomore standing for example because you want the chance to study abroad I’d encourage you to discuss that scenario with the respective admissions offices.

Why are you concerned about transferring too many?

Because I want to go into the new school as a sophomore or even freshman standing.

Can you afford 4 more years of college?

Why?

You don’t get to choose the number if credits that you can transfer. The college gets to choose how many will apply to your degree program, but your whole transcript is required. No option for opting out.

Yea

I’d suggest discussing your preference with the admissions officers. They won’t be assessing your application with that in mind so you need to find out if that’s something they’ll allow given the large number of classes it appears you’ve already taken.

You can’t erase your past. You can typically retake whatever courses you want. Just check with each specific university.

Why would you want to be a freshman again?

To change my major, to explore other majors. to basically just do college over again, because i did it poorly this time (i have a 3.8, i didn’t do poorly grade wise but in other aspects)

You can change your major anytime…and simply take longer to graduate. You don’t have to erase previously taken courses and in fact, really can’t do so.

You can’t take away your age and your credits.

You are an adult and can choose a different path and it has nothing to do with trying to hide past earned credits. People change majors all the time.

Transferring schools would give you a fresh start with rediscovering yourself and being the person you want to become.

But you can’t pretend to be 18 again if you are actually 21. Many of us would love a do over. You’ve made mistakes. Live and learn and move forward more positively.
