When Will He Start to Pack?

Lifesavers you all are. S doesn't leave til next Tuesday; busy saying good-bye to all his friends this week. I've given up on the lists, I did buy the set of sheets, I put boxes upstairs. We had the biggest fight we've ever had Saturday and then got over it, so I guess we're right on schedule with this separation thing. D gets home from camp and starts SAT review course Saturday; am I really starting this whole process over? Wine tonight.

"Wine tonight"

Dropping D off today. You got that right, erisamom.

Funny stories.

Son's leaving was oddly stress-free this time...guess his summer as a camp counselor made him see the adult side of things? And he is a Junior so I would hope he has this packing/moving thing down to a science by now.

Anyway, he packed up his room last night (most of it was still in bags from last May), refused my offer to do some laundry before he left, got up in a timely manner this morning, showered, packed the car, & DH took him off to school.

And I miss him. (sniff) Last son starts Jr. year of HS tomorrow. Seriously empty nest again until Thanksgiving. I'll try to hold off on the wine until tonight. ;)

S leaves for his senior year on Friday at 7:30am. He's driving out and moving into a school-owned apartment. He is currently on the couch reading a book of his sister's, and "claims" that he will start packing when he finishes the chapter. Ha...I know better than that! I suspect it will be 5am Friday morning and he'll be rolling in and packing the car...and I use the term packing lightly. More like throwing clothes, stereo, appliances et. al. in the trunk willy-nilly and heading off. The clothes he unpacked from his summer in Uzbekistan and Europe are on his bed (he has made the guest room his home over the past 3 weeks!), and the duffle he took to his grandmother's 2 weeks ago still has clothes in it. He is, however, a relatively low maintenance kid so whatever he forgets, he'll live without! I guess it comes from the experience of sending 3 off to college, the first of which has also been sent off to his (semi) grown-up life. They'll deal, and I don't need to!!!

An update to my previous post...
Me : Did you get anything done today?
S: Yeah I cleaned my car out

the car is not going with him. I am sure everything usable from the car is now added to stuff already on his floor. I just can't go in that room any longer......
He has 5 days left before we take him to school. I am sure the evening of day 4 he will start.

OK, I'm feeling really smug and I'm gonna brag, so be prepared....

S is leaving early next Saturday morning for soph year, we're driving. Last week he was writing a list, I asked him what it was and he said it was stuff he needed to buy for school (printer ink, toiletries, etc). Last Friday, no prompting, he went to Walmart and bought everything (8 days ahead of leaving). I came home from work on Monday afternoon and saw a pile in the dining room. "I packed," he said. Everything except his clothes. Made sure it would all fit in the new car.

I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor.

Frankly, he's been really bored this summer and I think he's counting the minutes until he goes back to school. Packing probably made him feel like he was going back sooner.

I was just re-reading the early pages of this thread, and about page 7 or so a lot of people were discussing if their sons would remember to bring underwear. Then I looked to the left side of the page, and I had some rather explicit ads for mens' underwear! Too Funny!

Well quit gloating Laflum!!!

My s is out with his friend and his GF. Still piles of stuff everywhere and he has gone out and re-bought stuff I already bought that we packed a few days ago. Of COURSE he said "See, if it wasn't already packed I'd have seen it and known I had it already"

jym--too funny!

The only thing I bought was a set of sheets to fit the new bed. Everything else he had from last year or will buy there.

But if I hadn't bought the sheets I don't think he would have remembered until 9 pm the night before. "Hey Mom, what's open this hour of the night?"

One down, one to go. "I will not worry about about packing. I will not worry about packing. I will not worry about packing." Glad I resisted the urge to be irritable with first son out the door. Will do my best not to tangle with the other son.

Finally REALLY started packing...

...as in, going through the mounds of stuff I'm "taking with me" from home and going, "Will I actually use this?"

I think I've cut my pile in half. Fun times.

I have a feeling this will be an all-nighter, as tomorrow night (or rather, tonight!) I just want to pile everything in the two cars we're taking.

S is actually coming with me to shop (without griping!). Shopped victoriously at Kohl's and got sneakers and shower shoes for 75% off. He wanted 3x3 notepaper for origami, but saw it was $8 for a 500-sheet stack and decided it was not worth it. Is also happy with getting a used file cabinet instead of new. He is buying a printer/scanner with some of his graduation gift money and it is fascinating to watch his evaluation of various options and how he decides if that feature is worth the extra price.

On the other hand, his room is a total pig sty. Some things never change!

D is just starting to wade through the foot deep pile of clothing that covers her floor. Some of it is clean, some not, fortunately she knows which is which. She's leavig next Wednesday. We've been shopping a couple of times and have a few places left on the list. Lots to do, not a lot of motivation.

I still haven't unpacked the stuff I brought home in May. I'm thinking about not even opening my suitcases and taking what's still in them.
We'll see how this goes...

Hgirl11, I think you gave the moms here collective heart attacks!!

cptofthehouse, LOL!

I have been out of town for one week. My son leaves Sat morning early. I requested packing to be somewhat of a priority while I was gone. Walked into the house. Of course dear sonny boy is not home. Room looks the same as when I left. Except now piles of dirty laundry line my laundry room floor. My husband tells me to let it go. I am struggling!
Not to mention that the child sitter

Jeez...it's incredible how much clothing I've recently accumulated that just "has" to come with me.

Mainly, tops and sweatshirts/sweaters/hoodies.

Odd. I never fancied myself a clothes-obsessed girl.

Here is our story.
We thought my D was taking care of everything as she was out shopping with friends most of the summer. Now comes the last week, she has not gotten any of the important stuff. It appears that all they had bought was a few pieces of cloths. Last few days My H and I had been running around completing her lists.
Today we got a another list which has all sort of things for the computer (routers, cables and what not). We already made several trip to Target and one trip to Ikea.

In any case, now piles of stuff sitting everywhere to be packed in to plastic boxes. My H thinks that she is not attempting to pack things because she is sad about leaving. My H and I will pack her thing (except cloths) tonight. I feel that we are sort of in this time zone now that everyone is getting upset for no reason. So it is better to get the job done without even thinking about whose job it is to pack.

We had been waiting for 18 years to send them off to college, and that time is around the corner and I can't even describe how I feel- numb!

Her moving in day is in two days.

Good news, bad news.
Lets start with "uh oh....."
When we took S#1 to college we had a 3 row minivan. Now we have a 2 row with fold down seats that split in the back (and there are 3 of us travelling so one half has to stay up). Good news-- stuff is packed-- fridge box, 2 large plastic rubbermaid containers, one smaller flat one, and 3 large duffels (plus our overnight bags). Looks like someone will be riding on the roof, and it looks like its gonna be awfully rainy.......
