Congratulations to you and your son, Texasdaddy! Granted it was their pencils that filled in the bubbles, but a lot of years of support and guidance was behind it.

His score was a 226

Thanks, Texasdaddy. Congrats to your son. That’s a great score that would qualify in any state.

Nothing today. Hoping she’ll hear next week. Good luck to everyone waiting.

Do only semifinalist receive letters in early september, or will all 50,000 from the first cut be notified if they made it or not. I emailed my Principal and he has not received anything yet, I got a 211 in KY which is 3-4 points above the cutoff for the last few years, but I’m worried as many people are saying their schools have already received the scores.

Zach…It really depends on how “up to speed” your school is on the whole NMSF/NMF process. Our D1 scored 235 on the PSAT (2 years ago, not this past year) so we knew she was going to be a Semifinalist, but her school didn’t contact any of the students (3 last year) until a couple of weeks after many other schools had notified their students.

The best thing you can do is stay in contact with your Principal and/or Guidance Counselor to see if anything has arrived from NMSC. If they’re pretty well versed on the whole process they’ll let you know, but it’s best to be informed and proactive.

Regarding “commended” status…your school should’ve received a letter and informed you before the end of this past school year that you were in the top 50,000. It’s not a huge deal if they didn’t tell you since your score easily qualifies for Commended, but if they didn’t it may give you an indication that they’re not fully aware of the potential importance of National Merit status. Good Luck!!

Zach…

It looks like you’ll make NMSF, right? If so, your school should notify you around Sept 16th. If you haven’t heard anything by then, ask your GC.

Sept 14 is the date this year. [National Merit Scholarship Corporation - NMSP](http://www.nationalmerit.org/press_releases.php)

Sorry if this has already been explained, I just need clarification! Will the school get a list of all students who were on the “top 50,000” list and whether or not they made semi-finalist? Or will they simply get a letter saying so and so made semi-finalist, with no mention of the ones who are commended?
I ask because my son was the only one in the school to make the first round, he is right on the borderline of the “semi-finalist” scores for the last 4 years, so if he did NOT make the cut-off, will they get a notification of that? I want to call today to see if the GC is in (our schools don’t start until next week), but would like to know if they get a letter regardless.
Thanks!

I think the only ones that are notified is the ones that made Semi-finalist

My school notified me on 8/30/11 to come for a special announcement reception and photo opp on 9/1/11. I made a 227 on the PSAT, so everyone’s assuming the announcement is for NMSF. My school likes to surprise students at these “special” ceremonies.

texascoed, that is nice that the school at least recognizes the NMSF’s. My oldest S made it 2 years ago, and nothing was done for him or the other scholars. Last year I looked for the list of semi-finalists/finalists - nothing. This year when S2 makes it I don’t expect anything for him. Too bad, its quite an honor.

Just remember you have to apply for the scholarship after you’ve been notified of your status. Every year people throw away scholarships because they didn’t follow through.
Again, some GCs just don’t get it. At one school the notifications sat in the office until the deadline had almost passed (it would have except for the one mother who was aware of its importance–frustrating experience to be sure).

Gouf78, do you know when the deadline is to turn in scholarship materials? My D also attends a school that does nothing for NMSF. They sent the first letter last spring to her in band with a student aide who at first gave it to the wrong student.

My daughter got notified today that she is a NMSF in IL. The counselor did not give her any packet. Is she suppose to get a packet? I don’t want to miss any deadlines!

I read there is a mid-October-ish deadline for the schools to return the completed forms/transcripts, etc. to the NM foundation. I think even if you don’t get the packets till mid September you still have a good bit of time.

In Texas, my son also notified of his NMSF status today, but the GC also said there is no packet, it is done online. Hmm…anyone else know about this?

Moneybags…

Call the GC…your D is supposed to be given a NMSF packet…it’s a big envelope with stuff in it.

^^ I really doubt this is done online. There have been letters for everything else. There is important information regarding procedures and deadlines. Would not switch to online at this point. Call College Board or National Merit Scholarship Corporation if you do not get packet from GC.

I actually did call this morning. They said the GC has an online link, and they have to go print out the letter to the student, as well as the instructions. My GC hadn’t looked online yet, so I figured I would just be a little more patient as she said she would try to do it this week. This is the first year they are doing it this way.
