I wonder how early in december that michigan sends out info about merit aid. I also wonder if it comes out on thursdays like the application responses as well.

@smart cookie - I see, thanks

@ mfortuna:
I know that scholarships come in the mail only, so even if they are released on thursdays, they won’t be received on thursdays. I imagine that scholarships start going out the second week of December and are then sent out the third week of december as well, meaning that we could know as early as next Wednesday or as late as Wednesday the 23rd. I don’t think (based upon last year’s threads and based upon my communication with the admissions office) that scholarships are sent out again until January.

So I will wait patiently and retain a mild amount of hope, though Michigan is not known for generous merit aid :(

Friend showed me this on LSA Scholarship page. Not sure if it’s an update or I just missed it before…

"Notification: Scholarship offers will be made the first week of February, March, and April, respectively.

Deadline: LSA students admitted by December 24, 2009 via Early Response will receive primary consideration for LSA Scholarships. Scholarships still available after January will be awarded on an ongoing basis. "

smart.cookie - it may be a long winter.

I can tell you that this year the earliest scholarship notifications may be going out a little later than in previous years. That is, centrally-awarded scholarships that they sent out in December last year are more likely to go out in January this year. No idea about scholarships from inidividual units, however.

Hey, hoedown, do you know why? To everyone else – last year’s letter I believe was dated Dec. 15, Rec’d Dec. 19 if I recall. But don’t count on that if HD is correct that they are delaying. I do know they actually increased their FA allotment for next year but maybe the Promise scholarship mess has had an impact???

@hoedown: Where does your information come from? Because in my contact with the director of student recruitment at the Nursing school I was told, in November, that " The Shipman and Stamps scholarship process will begin next month." This was confirmed when I called the admissions office at U of M.

And, as for the LSA scholarships, those dates seem new to me. I know for sure that the Shipman interview dates have historically been in March, and that those selected to interview are notified well before the March date, thus it seems strange that U of M would shift back all of its merit scholarship announcement dates for no apparent reason…

Also, @mollymauk, this piece of information:
“Scholarships still available after January will be awarded on an ongoing basis.”
seems to contradict the February, March, and April notification dates. U of M is certainly making things chaotic this year…

I know in the past that U of M asked its merit scholarship recipients to CONFIRM their awards by February, so this all seems very delayed to me :(

SC - I am betting that Hoedown is referring to a different set of scholarships than Shipman and Stamps, which I’m sure “begin” assessment in Dec. I suspect she’s referring to the ‘Tradition’/‘Experience’ general set of scholarships that run $10,000 instate, $20,000 OOS and have historically began sending offer letters in Dec.

Let me see if I can help clarify.
In Dec., in past, there have been general entrance scholarships applicable to any program of study such as Michigan Tradition and Michigan Experience offers of $10,000 instate, $20k OOS. These continue to be offered as available to selected candidates through Jan Feb March as available.
(U of Mich knows its yield rate, so it can predict fairly accurately its acceptance rate for scholarship…so don’t put tooooooo much stock into their needing to know by Feb 15 re money being “left over”)

Also in Dec., on a rolling basis, believe shipman and stamps begin evaluations and send letters Jan Feb Mar.

School specific scholarships, eg. Engineering has its own entrance as well as Shipman; School of Music has its own merit as well as Shipman, LSA has its own plethora of scholarships, all operate on their own timetables, plus Shipman. Eg. COE seems to award early. SOM awards very very late (I mean late APRIL for some kids, since final auditions are usually at the end of March…) etc.

Further, it is possible to be offered one scholarship, such as Tradition, and then a few months later, be offered ANOTHER scholarship, such as School of Music, LSA, Art & Design, etc.
Does that help?

In other words, you guys could be notified at ANYTIME about some scholarship or another. It’s not over til its over : ) But the early birds, eg. EA, get “more” of the worms! ALSO, some OOS students are quite surprised that while they did not receive a lot or any merit money, they did receive hefty GRANTS, – eg some worth 20k or more – which are just as good, depending on financial circumstances.

So at the end of the day, you really will not know where you sit financially until April. Just so you know. It’s a wild ride at times, but enjoy and good luck!

So wait, besides Shipman, Stamps is the 2nd biggest scholarship given out? AKA…there’s no full tuition scholarship, only full ride with Shipman or 20k from Stamps? Or am I missing something here?

Wow. Just got back from dinner and saw the updates.

I agree it’s frustrating and I hope that they can ultimately send out some notices earlier.

The site also says that Shipman scholars will be nominated before Jan 15th, and I think that the timeline for Bell scholars is about the same. Unfortunately, they give out so few of those awards that I think most of us will be waiting until February, March, and April to find out if there is any merit aid in it for us or not.

So has anyone received ANY letter regarding any scholarship info at all?

i did get a letter saying i was nominated for the rogel award for excellence, but i won’t find out until march if i get it.

Cool! That is an out of state award, which is interesting in that they likely have started to notify out of state students of potential awards. chip40 is definitely the first though.

@chip40: Congratulations, and I hope you get it!

thank you smart.cookie!

Update: Some IS admitted students announcing that they have been emailed to apply for the Bell Scholarship from LSA.

Good luck to all, and please update this thread when you hear from U of M :)

so I mentioned this on another thread, but to update on here, I received a Bell Scholarship invite to APPLY on Dec. 14…by email…OOS. (I was accepted by the first batch, if it makes any diff)

yeah I guess to add on with chambay, even though I mentioned it elsewhere, I got the e-mail invite for the Bell Scholarship to apply on the 14th too! I’m IS though.
