Does U of M usually meet 100% demonstrated need for in-state students? If not, how much of the need do they meet? I’m starting to really worry about affording to go to U of M now…:(

correct me if i’m wrong, but the average is that UM meets 90% of demonstrated need.

I’d just like to inform everyone that I got the Michigan Tradition Scholarship (in state) for 10K a year for four years. I got the letter today and it was sent out on the 18th! So it seems like Mich is starting to send out lots of money, keep your eyes out. Great Christmas present! :D

"According to the University’s response last year to the Senate Finance Committee, the University aims to meet 100 percent of demonstrated financial need for Michigan residents as determined by an internal formula.

Coleman said in the January 2009 interview that although she understood what Baucus and Grassley were suggesting, she did not agree that it was appropriate for the government to place payout restrictions on colleges and universities. She explained that if the University were to provide a larger amount of financial aid to current students, then students in the future would likely suffer."

Operative word: “aims”
Who knows what this year will look like…

I have a 4.0 UM GPA, motion…so my real one has been clouded with dumb A-s in classes like music and art
(yes, art and music classes are hard at my school)

when you guys say what scholarships you get (like the regents, or tradition, etc.) could you specify if your OOS or instate?
That would help a lot!

I got the regents and i’m instate (the regents is for instate students only)

^ Congrats! Could you please post your GPA and ACT/SAT, and post the CR+Math score if it’s the SAT you took?

~Thanks

Thanks! Sure, my GPA is 3.97 UW and my SAT CR+Math is 1360 (not very good I don’t think). I wasn’t expecting any merit scholarships so this was a pleasant surprise! Now since I got that it makes me hope for more, although I’m not sure if that’s realistic!

Thanks! I’m trying to figure out of I’ll get anything at all…does U of M consider course rigor when determining who get’s scholarships?

I think that it’s holistic (a lot more holistic than admissions is) so that definitely will be a factor, I think at least.

I asked this question in a different thread but got no replies so I will try here! Does anyone know if you get invited to apply for LSA honors but choose not to, if that might effect merit scholarship chances? My daughter was accepted, is an OOS student, and is hoping like many others for any possible merit money to make it more affordable. She was invited to apply for honors but isn’t sure if she wants to. She might be interested in the Research Community though. Anyway, she doesn’t want to hurt her chances for merit money by chosing not to apply for honors.(Ie: looking like a “slacker” ha ha) She is on the fence and very burned out from writing essays, and I’m sure you can all relate. Any thoughts?

I would think it wouldn’t factor into most lsa scholarships.

Seems like all they look at is the original app. I’m in the same position as your daughter, and I think she should probably write the essay to keep her options open. It’s only 500 words and these essays seem a little “easier” than the others.

My daughter just got notified by regular mail (single page letter) that she has been awarded a Michigan Tradition scholarship- $40K over 4 years (10K/yr). She is OOS, was admitted to the LSA on Dec 15th and has not applied for financial aid. She was invited to the honors college and will apply but hasn’t yet sent in her essay. It is very nice to get this award.

If you don’t mind me asking vicariousparent, when was the letter dated?

i thought the michigan tradition scholarship is only for in state applicants?

The letter was dated Dec 18th. That is three days after she was notified on Wolverine Access of her admission. She is definitely out of state.

Based on this board, several OOS candidates received this award last year, BTW, so it’s def. not “in-state” only.

okay, thanks for clarifying that

The OFA’s site does say that it is only in-state though, although you’re right about last year. I wonder what that’s about.

Any new updates?
