I see the deadline to let the UMich engineering school know if you are accepting their scholarship offer is Feb 26. Does that mean we have to accept Michigan’s offer of admission by that date? It sounds like if we want the money then we won’t be able to see where else we get into before deciding whether we want to go to Michigan. Does anyone know?

Meh…Regent’s Scholarship is still about 1 out of 4 people. If you think about it, $1,500 is a decent lump of money. I mean, it barely makes a dent in the tuition, but money is money =)

Do you guys know about any cut-offs for this scholarship? My guess is the top 25% of the accepted class get this scholarship (in-state people)? And since only grades/ACT/SAT are taken into account, I’m guessing maybe a 3.9 UW/31+/2100+? About right?

I can’t find anything about the Regent’s except that it is given to in-state people.

No idea how common it is, but like Heplayer92 says, money is money. and $1,500 can prolly cover your textbooks for a year. :)

CRL123 – Your question is a little bit tricky so please look into this to represent yourself. The association of colleges agrees ethically that all students deserve the opportunity to evaluate all aspects of a financial offer before committing to attend a school. So “technically” U of Mich cannot really ask you to make a binding decision. However, it rightly needs to manage its merit money, and it does have the right to withdraw a merit offer if you do not accept the offer.
How our family handled this situation last year was we did in fact commit and pay the $200 deposit by the deadline, but did send a letter outlining that if the rest of the package made it financially impractical we would need to withdraw our acceptance and forfeit our $200 deposit. In our case, Michigan was son’s #1 choice, but we still needed to see the need-based FA package before feeling 100% comfortable.
Just know that you would be within your rights to have a conversation with the department about your concerns re: committing before all the information is in. On one hand, it’s generous of them to offer, but on the other hand, a bit unfair to require a commitment ethically, IMHO. I hope this helps you : )

If you qualify for Regent’s do you think you have a good shot at honors?

I got a scholarship called the Michigan Experience Award completely out of the blue. I didn’t apply for it and didn’t even know what it was. It is a scholarship for $40,000 and it was given to me based on my admissions essays and they said everyone who fills out an app. to the U of M is automatically considered for it.

I received it around March-April of my senior year of high school.

Wow, charles, are you OOS or IS?? What did you write about that you think got you the scholarship? Way to go. Are you a freshman now?

I received the Regents Scholarship today as well. To the person who was asking about Regents and the honors program, I have been invited to apply to that program (GPA 3.98, SAT 780/680/800), so I guess there could said to be some correlation between the Regents recipients and the honors invitees.

Thank you kmccrindle. The situation is that there is another college where my son is being considered for a full scholarship so although at this point he would accept the Michigan offer, if that one came through then it would be better financially for us of course.

In that case, out of an abundance of caution, I might contemplate discussing with each school the desire to review final offers at the end of the admissions process, and ask the best way to stay within the integrity of the process ; )
Eg. you would not want the full scholarship school to somehow eliminate your son due to any intel about committing to U Mich. To be safe, I had let another school know during that situation what was at work, and that kept our options open.
Best wishes!

I just received the Edward A. Harang Scholarship in the mail today…it’s only 1k per year though so I’m hoping for more as 1k merely puts a dent in the 45k cost.

motion12345: Congrats on the $$, my s is still waiting and hoping for some as well. Could you please share your major and stats? Thanks

I recieved a letter saying I had the regents scholarship last saturday.

Yeah I got the Harang Scholarship too.
UM GPA: 4.0
Rank: top 20% of my 50 person class
SAT: 2220–680 CR, 780 M, 760 W
ACT: 33–36 E, 34 R, 32 M, 29 S
It’s not much at all though. I hope I get more!!!

I got accepted to LSA, but I’m pretty sure that it’s just some generic OOS scholarship (non-related to the college you got accepted into). Also, spiralcloud, how can you have a 4.0 yet only be top 20%?

My stats aren’t stellar at all: 3.7 UW GPA, Top 20%, 2220 SAT - 690 CR, 760 M (f***ing horrible curve), 770 W. I did send a few research papers in, so who knows if that’s what got me it. Don’t be bummed if you don’t get it because it’s only $1k a year anyways (which is nothing for OOS students).

S got the Harang Scholarship today ($1K/year) OOS.
UW GPA: 4.0
Rank: top 1%
ACT: 35
Hoping he gets more soon…

Alright, I got a question. I know that UMichigan doesn’t guarantee to meet demonstrated need for OOS students, but do they decide who to give financial aid to first based on merit (and then continue until they run out of the amount of money that they can dole out)? If they do, then do you think that it would be apt to say that if we received the Harang Scholarship (since it’s only for OOS students and only based on academic achievement) then it would be fair to say that UMichigan will meet our demonstrated financial need?

^ I wouldn’t assume that at all. There are many other scholarships for OOS students at higher levels that are awarded on merit, and even students receiving those often have unmet financial need.

No one (IS or OOS) will really know enough until U of M releases a final award package after they have submitted the FAFSA and CSS Profile.
