I did have my GRE booked for the 27th Sept, but i'm so not ready yet! In my practice tests i'm gettin in the 500's ouch! Thing is i really want to apply for sept 2007, so is early december too late? most of the courses i'm applying to want the applications by early Jan- but am i lowering my chances by applying so last minute?

Honestly, August is when most people take it. It becomes infinitely tougher to split GRE studying and regular classes. If you want to apply by January you'll need to take the GREs before October, as per most grad programs. This is universal advice, I think. So, if you're intent on applying for fall 07, you'll be better off just taking the exam on 9/27.

wow really?we get no info here, i've ben researching it all myself and i've been so meticulous, how did i miss that?

If i know i'll get much higher scores if i take it say next year for 2008 admission, do you reckon i should take a year out? I just don't want a bad score on my record because ultimately i'm aiming for some top tier, ultra competetive grad schools

Well, if you are positive you will score poorly, I'd probably wait and study.

Are you scoring in the 500s on both sections? Which programs are you looking at? What field?

The GREs aren't the be all and end all of graduate admissions, but if you're scoring a 1000 on the GREs you're probably far below their average. It could be advantageous to wait, but you have to realize that studying can only get you so far.

You can take the GRE general test probably as late as early December for January deadlines.

The biggest problem is that this involves trusting that ETS will get your scores to the appropriate places without any delays or problems, which is not always a good assumption to make (ask me and UCLAri. We have some stories). Taking the test late means you won't have a safety margin in case/when something goes wrong.

Hey. I'm applying for International relations and journalism masters. I am an undergraduate now in the UK and have obtained a 1st so far and i'm pretty sure that won't change. I don't think it's that i haven't got what it takes to do well on the GRE- Iv'e been getting 500's for verbal and quantitive- I just think it's prob due to the fact i haven't done as much preparation as i need to. I'm thinking i'm going to need at least 700 on both those sections- although all the uni's i've communicated with stated they have no minimum score- they look at the bigger picture- and my application is pretty strong.

But because i'm applying to Yale, Stanford, Columbia (the 3 most competitive ones i'm looking at), i need to get really high GRE scores

I was thinking of taking it early/mid november. The only thing that worries me is because i'm from the UK- ETS may take EVEN longer to transmit the scores, and i don't want to waste all my time revising between now and then, if it's gonna be too late you know?

how unimportant is the GRE ?? isnt it a hook for one with 750++ on both sections n stellar GPA ??
ANy other info about how do adcoms look at it ??

Do you advice anyone to focus on his study n researches then takes one yr off to study the GRE ??

amierauk :
I really know little about admissions but 500 might affect your chances, its really worth it waiting one yr n ending up in Yale
All the luck :)
