I speak Chinese at home and I've taken Japanese for 2.5 years. Does that count? Taken French since I was 11 :P

well chinese can sound elegant, depending on the region

Yea I speak Canto at home and to non-speakers it sounds very loud and like we're yelling all the time :D But mando is very nice (I know some since I took Chinese school and my parents speak it), it's full of shh or xx sounds.

my mom's beijing tone sounds quite harsh to a non-speaker too

really? I thought the beijing accent is very languid-sounding - making the speaker sound totally sincere and chill, while the southern dialects sound like the speakers are haggling in the market and the sentences are more "loaded" with articles unnecessary in mandarin...XD my family speaks both types of dialects so that's my observance.

nanjing-accent ROCKS (sorry for personal bias :))

i'm from nanjing too! represent!! haha

Okay, so this might be a biased place to ask this, but should I take Chinese or Japanese in college? I know Chinese will be more useful in the future but I'm not sure how I'll do with the tones and everything. Are they hard to master? And with Japanese, there are a lot less characters to learn, even between all three types. So I'm basically thinking that Japanese would be easier (for me) but Chinese would be more useful. So which should I do?

Chinese rocks so take chinese, and since china is has a huge economy, while japan's still in recessions (is it out of it yet??), take chinese.

jili, that's so cool!!! which part of nanjing??

omg me from nanjing also!!!!!! guys we should form a club

Shanghai dude right here...rock on from the east coast!

I would say Chinese, for the same reasons stated above. Personally I'm gonna continue studying Chinese. I'll also take Japanese since I have had elementary Japanese.

oMEGArich, 上海发展得好快啊

I considered doing both but I don't think I have enough time to do that, since I'm double majoring, too.

do CHINESE!! The language rocks and is the MOST widely spoken language in the world and the new market opportunities are to your advantage!!
