Where are you from?

I am just curious where all of you are from-I am from B’ham, have a junior who thinks she doesn’t want to go to Alabama- but I am not taking it off list- just curious where youa re from and what draws you mostly to AlaBama (besides the #1 football team-HAHA)

Hi,

We now live in the Huntsville area. We are from California (H is originally from Indiana), but H was transferred here.

When my son was a junior, he was determined not to go to a “southern school.” He was going to go to school in the NE!!! LOL So, we toured around. We also visited a few southern schools - Vandy, Clemson, UGa, Auburn, etc. I insisted that we visit Bama because he was going to be a NM.

After our campus tour, we wandered over to the Honors College offices. We met Dr. Sharpe…fluke…he was just in his office and invited us in. He told us all about the Honors College and such. After our visit, he walked us out to our car…LOL. What service!

A year later, we visited again. While standing in line for food, Dr. Sharpe walked up to us and remember us by name! LOL That was shocking. He invited us to sit in on a CBH class, which we did. We also sat in on some other classes. My son was hooked. He had no interest in going elsewhere.

The campus is gorgeous, the dorms are very nice, the profs like the kids (we’ve only known a couple of “do not take him” profs…LOL). The honors classes are interesting, and are mind-broadening.

While the school search process was going on for our older son, my younger son loudly declared that there was NO WAY he was going to go to the same school as his brother. That was fine with us. But, after he helped us move son #1 into his dorm, and he went to Parents Weekend, he was hooked, too. He didn’t want to apply anywhere else. I made him apply to about 6 schools - just in case he changed his mind.

So, that’s why both of my boys are at Bama. One has the NMF scholarship, and the other has the Presidential and Engineering scholarships. :)

We’re four hours away in Memphis, TN - yes, that’s the home of Elvis. I’m a native and only just visited Graceland for the first time last year since all of our out of town friends seemed shocked that we hadn’t been. Candlelight vigils are a blast!

We visited Bama after hearing about the incredibly generous NMF scholarship & immediately fell for the place. UA has everything my D was needs, and we are looking forward to all the upcoming events and August move in!

We’re from Cape May county, NJ. I attended Bama back in the early 90’s and son will be a freshmen at UA in the fall.

We are from the Nashville area in Middle TN but are NJ natives only 7 years removed.

NJBama: my family used to vacation in Cape May every year for a long time. I remember begging my parents for that one night on the boardwalk in Wildwood everytime.

RobD, my H lived in Franklin for several years and loved it. Middle TN is probably the most beautiful in the state.

I’m from Washington, specifically north of Seattle. I learned about UA from parents mentioning it on CC (I lurked on CC during hs), took the ACT hoping for a score that would get me the presidential scholarship and succeeded, met a representative in Seattle, toured, and fell in love with UA. I like a lot about UA, especially the friendliness of the people and the fact that out of any college I researched, I feel that I really don’t have to compromise on what I want in a college. I wanted a school with top notch academic opportunities, a school that respects and cares about me, comfortable living arrangements, and lots of school pride. Coming to UA, I realized that my lifelong favorite color and animal (red/crimson and an elephant, respectively) happen to represent UA.

As a side note, I’ve noticed that a lot of Alabamians have family in Seattle or want to move there for some reason. I always meet people flying Birmingham-Seattle and also get a lot of Roll Tide’s from strangers who are from Alabama when I’m running errands at home. The connection is also mentioned in at least 2 country songs.

I’m really happy to see all the different states represented at UA.

RobD, yeah the Wildwood boardwalk is still a staple of summertime down here.

I always tell people who have a negative view of NJ that they must have never visited the Cape May area. Tv only shows NJ as the Camden, Newark, etc etc cities. But 80% of this state is beautiful and nothing like what is portrayed on film.

My father in law used to own a beach house in Avalon, NJ and we have wonderful memories of family vacations there. Love the Jersey Shore!! Where’s my cheesesteak?

I’ve been dreaming of a Taylor Pork Roll sandwich since I read NJBama’s post. Is that stand still on the Cape May boardwalk? and Morrow’s Nuts?

It always goes back to food for me…

Echoing NJ’s thoughts. Everyone thinks of Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras when they mention New Orleans.

We have beautiful wetlands, wonderful wildlife viewing, and of course, the best food you ever want to eat. Not just Cajun and not just fried!

I think what made son fall in love with Bama is the fact that it did have a diverse population. When he came back from CBH weekend, he was so thrilled to announce that he had met kids from New York and Pennsylvania, of all places!

Seatide, what country songs have the Seattle Bama reference?

Malanai, Avalon is a great town. The Princeton bar is still the spot to go to down here.

I used to own a restaurant (Tridi-Jo’s) on 97th st in Stone Harbor. The town right next to Avalon. I can cook you a cheesesteak or even better a cheesesteak stromboli :-)

Small world.

Robd, Morrow’s is still there. They have two locations. One on the boardwalk and one on Washington Ave. I’m not sure about the stand that served the pork roll sandwiches.

You’re on! Have Scottie beam it over right away. It’s lunch time here in the mid-Pacific :)

we live in houston.

most kids around here go to TEXAS or A&M. that’s it. if they don’t get in there, they go to either BLINN or UTSA. a good number will also go to TECH or BAYLOR.

my DD was going to go to A&M. then we visited BAYLOR and she decided A&M was just to big. so i started looking for smaller schools where she would be able to go for about the same cost as A&M.

she ended up applying to arkansas, baylor, a&m and UA. visited all. loved alabama.

it was a long road to get there … but she ended up with full tuition scholarship + some.

hoping everything works out! : )

We live in rural Virginia, about 90 minutes to two hours from the Nation’s Capital – depending on traffic. Where we are, however, our idea of traffic is that the llamas from across the road have escaped, and everything has to stop while we help the neighbors heard the llamas home. We also have cattle living next door to us, as well as a donkey. There are no traffic lights or grocery stores, too.

Most Virginia kids stay in state, because Virginia, Virginia Tech William & Mary, Richmond and a host of other schools are just outstanding. The public schools are also an excellent value. My son’s graduating class of 86 sent four to Virginia this fall, and yes, they are quite proud of that, because his school had never sent so many to UVA in one year.

My son, who also posts on CC, never intended on going to Alabama. He envisioned attending school in New York State or New England. But a National Merit offer, a spot in CBH, the promises of lots of AP credit and the lure of those lovely honors dorms won him over.

He already has had four students from our school gain acceptance to Alabama, with a fifth verbally committing to apply this summer. His kid brother, who is in the eighth grade, does not count, although he said that Alabama is No. 1 on his list.

^^^That’s good your son got students to consider UA. For many people, it would be very hard to turn down an offer from UVA; it’s a common question on this board.

Montegut, the two (older) songs I know of are one by Pam Tillis (more of a south-Seattle connection) and Blackhawk’s “Postmarked Birmingham”.

We are from CAlifornia and hadn’t considered Alabama but received a letter of interest from Alabama. On a lark, son called the local admissions counselor and interest was tweeked. Alabama. Alabama. Not on the list. Silly us! We had visited schools over the years from the New England area to North Carolina and Texas. Never thought of Alabama.

Yet, once we started looking into it, especially after receiving the strong scholastic support, we took a trip south and were hooked. I had thought a smaller school would be a better fit for my son. However, people seem to really talk and listen to each other at Bama. Also, EVERYONE is helpful and although it is a fairly large school, it lacks the impersonal nature of other large schools we visited. Meeting with folks positively hooked both of us. I knew when son asked to swing by the bookstore to buy a sweatshirt, he was Bama Bound.

I have to say that without the information and support of people on this forum, I’m not sure our investigation would have gone as far as it did. YOU played a pivotal roll in the decision :)

From Orange County. Thought my son would end up where it snows (“for a change”) or stay in SoCal. Came down to Rose-Hulman (Indiana = snow, small and EE focus), UA or LMU (family history). He and dad went to visit, everyone was nice, accessible (even the Deans), Honors College and different experience. Revisited LMU (too similar to HS) and it was BAMA Bound.

Now we just have to figure the easiest way to get there from here.

I’m from Dallas TX. Everyone at my school goes to Texas/TAMU or Tech. Or the community college transfer mechanism like ACC or Blinn. Bama was 13th on my list of 13 schools, but CBHP, $$$ and the incredible kindness and interest that Bama folks showed on my visits, (especially the first one when my mom got sick and I did everything by myself) really attracted me to the school.
I stalked CC throughout my late high school years as well, which was one of the reasons bama got added to the list in the first place.

That is why my D doesn’t want to go to Bama- ALOT from HS go there and she says it doesn’t have what she wants to study- she is now leaning toward Auburn-many from HS go here also- I am so glad that it is such a GREAT school-I went away to a girl’s school and my siblings went away also- So many used to go away to school but now with the price of Admissions -so many go instate!!
