hey guys. i was originally planning on applying to Columbia's summer program but my ap chem teacher passed the deadline writing my recD:.

any ideas where i can still apply?

i would love if i could do some research over the summerD:(science related)

sighhhh
i was so excited for columbia alsoD:

btw i live in NY if u needed to know.

Did you mean the overpriced pre-college “experience” at Columbia? If so, it’s certainly not worth the price.

Re research, ask around at local colleges or to professors.

and how do I do that? I don’t know any professors. or anone

When we looked at summer programs a couple years ago there were a number of options in the general area. Cornell, Brown and Northeastern all had good summer programs but I have no idea of their respective deadlines. They are all relatively expensive.

My D chose the Summer Scholars Program at Furman University in South Carolina and loved it. It has 2 sessions of one week programs and many students take a different program for each week. Their offerings are diverse but a little more limited than the others. It was a great value and she enjoyed the experience. That is an option if you want to go outside the region.

i looked into furman university and i don’t have any interests in their courses(i want to do something science related)

i also just looked at stanford’s summer program (not the epgy - passed the deadline) and it looks very interesting. deadline in may 23rd which is perfect for me. just wondering people what should i take that is physics related? i plan on doing calc bc and physics c next year but i really don’t know which i should pick. i also have taken a physics course last summer which i could review and remember some basic knowledge.

JUST checked brown’s. they have some more courses that i am interested in BUT, stanford is granting credit (i believe) which i can transfer later on and bring my college gpa up, however brown’s has more stuff about med and i wish to become a doctor.

so basically which one should i go for? both sound awesome and cost doesn’t matter mmuch.
any other programs i should check?

i just found out about CMU’s summer program and it sounds really interesting. sadly the deadline was jan 1stD:

do u think i could email them and maybe they could let me particapte in their program?

Brown’s program isn’t worth the money, IMO. Cost may not matter much, but you can get better experiences elsewhere.

Stanford, if for credit, would be (I assume) you taking regular undergraduate classes over the summer. Not bad, but there may still be better research opportunities. You’ll need to talk to professors some day; might as well ask around now.

CMU? January 1? That was … four months ago (actually, I thought the deadline as April 1).

where do u rec me to ask? i live in long island, new york so lots of places are available to me such as stony brook, hofstra, columbia, nyu, nyit and other colleges. i just don’t know what to say. who do i contact? like a specific prof?

Look up some professors of a department in which you are interested, perhaps? E.g., if you wanted to do research in nanotechnology, find someone at a nearby uni that specializes in that and ask if they’re interested in working with a high schooler over the summer–or even if they simply need a lab assistant (boring, but gives useful lab procedures experience).

I would try contacting some columbia professors. I attended a science symposium there earlier this year for high schoolers and talk to one of the admission directors who suggested I do the same if I cannot find other programs. Other colleges in NYC are probably the same. Just find a researcher doing something that interests you and email them. Make sure to say what about their research interests you.

just saw ur link. very interesting. i plan on emailing lots of prof’s 2mrw

i am seriously considering doing something cell/tissue wise in the future. it always interested me. what department would that be?

[STEM CELL INITIATIVE: A Columbia University Medical Center Community of Researchers.](Columbia Stem Cell Initiative - CSCI) or [Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering](http://www.bme.columbia.edu/index.html).

thank you so much. i just found some stuff related to those topics with nyu but i will write emails to all.

hopefulyl someone will take me:P
