where can I get help with English pronunciation in UW?

I am an international student and have trouble with English pronunciation. Sometimes, ppl dont really understand what I say. Is there any club, organization in UW Seattle that can help students on this problem?

I don’t know one specifically, but you could try to set up a language exchange with a native English speaker who is studying your language. You help them with your native language and they help you with English. I think especially this would work in Asian languages (I took Chinese and could NEVER get the tones right).

You could try to email the faculty that teach the language classes and make the offer if you wanted to go that route.

Or also, maybe talk to FIUTS?

Definitely check out FIUTS.

If you’re part of a student organization (ie. Chinese Student Organization, Korean Student Organization…), check with the leaders/members and see if they can hook you up with another member who can help you with English! Sometimes working with someone who knows a language you’re fluent in will really help when you describe what message you want to get across.

you can visit the CLUE program at Mary Gates Hall and get help. You can also visit the language lab and get programs that are useful as well. another option would be enrolling in classes that improve pronunciation. community colleges have such classes; its cheaper than uw. Please don’t forget to discuss that with your English professor or any esl professor and ask them fro extra help or any resources that can help you with this issue. good luck

There is also a class for non-native English speaking students that you could take: SPHSC 111. I don’t know anyone personally who has taken it but this is the description: “For non-native speakers of English only. Speech sounds of American English. Practice in listening and using American speech sounds and intonation patterns. Credit/no-credit only. Offered: AWSpS.”

[SPEECH & HEARING SCIENCES](SPEECH & HEARING SCIENCES)

As of right now there is a spot open. And they have this class every quarter.

Just noticed that ASUW also offers something: https://depts.washington.edu/asuwxpcl/courses/view/13WI.19.08402
