I used to live in the US when I was young, then I moved abroad.
I haven’t learned how to drive because I have always lived in a city. But I’ll go back to the US for college soon, I think I might need a car.
I want to lean how to drive (in the US), but it looks like they usually teach driving in high school?
Does anyone know where can I learn how to drive?
Thanks for answering.
In our area they do not teach Drivers Education in the schools. There are several driving schools around and at least one online class then you do your in car with one of the driving schools. I would do a google search for the area you live in for driving schools.
Driving used to be taught mostly through high schools, but it’s not really the case any more. Most people enroll in a Driver’s Education program at a driving school. I lived in a college town and there were a few students from other countries in the program with me, so it’s definitely the way to go. If you can’t find any driving schools, try calling the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to see how they recommend you take classes. In my area there was even a way to take the class online, and then you would just meet up with an instructor from a driving school to do your required “drives” that you needed to pass. Actually, come to think of it, in my state you can learn without taking a class (you just need to apply for a learner’s permit) and then all you have to do is pass the written and driving exams.
As said above, look for driver’s ed schools in your area. They must be approved by your state’s DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles).
In my state, a parent/guardian, or someone over 21 who holds an operator or commercial license can simply teach you how to drive, as long as the parent/guardian certifies in writing that you completed at least 30 hours of driving, including 10 hours at night. I don’t know the rules for other states – check your state’s driver license manual. I self-studied for the learner’s permit, and my dad taught me how to drive (I didn’t do drivers ed, and my school didn’t offer it).
Check out the local community colleges in the area around the college you will attend as they often offer driver training.
