Driving

How many of you guys drive already? I am currently 16, turning 17 in less than a month, and don't even have my permit yet. I feel left behind. :( Half the people I know already drive themselves around.

Maybe I will learn this summer. I have some questions. For the written test, is it administered on certain days only (like the SAT) or can you just go to the DMV or wherever to take the test? Also, do you need to study for it or is it just common sense? If so, are there any books on the topic or ways to study for it? Do you HAVE to take a Driver's Ed class before you take the test?

And how long does it take to learn how to drive? How long did it take for you to get your license? I was reading on the DMV website about having certain number of hours of driving if your a minor? So you HAVE to have a certified class if you want your license and you're not yet 18?

I didn't get my driver's license until a few months before I was to turn 18. Driving really isn't that great. It gets old after awhile.

You do need to study your state's rule book. Signs and all are pretty much common sense if you've been learning what they mean since you were young. And as far as taking the test, call your DMV and make an appointment.

So is there any required classes you must take before taking the test? What is the process of getting one's driver's license?

Hm. I live in NJ. I think our system is different from most states'. We took Driver's Ed and the written test in school. But yeah, you have to study for it. I got like an 82 on mine (need an 80 to pass). Our state has a driver's manual which we studied from, but then we got a cheat sheet with a bunch of questions, and almost all the test questions were from that sheet.

Hmm I won't go into the steps for getting your license since it's quite different in NJ. We had to go for six hours of lessons with a certified instructor, then drive with a guardian for at least six months until you turn 17, then go for your road test and get your license.

Driving isn't hard at all as long as you have confidence and common sense. The hardest part is knowing how to get places. Oh and probably paying for gas.

thanks.

Anyone in California know the process?

Who is a left handed person?

if you are left handed:

Do you drive with one or two feet?

I'm left handed, why would l drive with 2 feet? Anyways to one of the posters who said driving gets old quick, what are you on, I feel its awesome to able to just jump in my car and be able to coral gables, miami beach, or downtown in a few minutes.

Most left handed people I know say it is comfortable for them to drive with 2 feet.

how would you right handed people feel if you had to drive using your left foot?

The New Jersey process is pretty much the same as the CA process. You need to take drivers ed until you are and then you can go into the dmv to take your permit test. But one thing CA(or at least san francisco) requires is that you bring proof of enrollment in drivers training(6 hours with instructor) with you to the test unless you are over 17.5. Then, you have to do 50 hours of driving and have your permit for at least 6 months before you can get your license.
here is a link that should help

I live in NJ, so I don't know about the process in CA, but I can give you some advice for studing for the written test once you find a place to take it.

As theoneo explained, in NJ we have a driver's ed class in school and were given a manual with all of NJ's driving laws...and taking the course in school was really good because the teachers wanted us all to pass, so they practically gave us all the test questions beforehand. You can still get used to the types of questions that will appear on the test if you take practice tests online.

One website you might find useful is dmv.org. You select a state and can take tests specific to that state-I just looked up California and there are two full length sample tests. I took tests and short sample quizzes on several sites and found that the questions were very repetitve. I relied mostly on the online practice tests, and I got a 92 on the exam (46/50) without spending too much time on it.

i got my driver's license two weeks after turning 16 (this March) but my parents aren't supporting me
can't do too much with 3000 dollars when you have to pay for insurance, vehicle tabs, gas, AND the car itself...

I drive a manual...so I need two feet, though I'm a righty ;P

I've been driving since September...I love it. My parents have paid for the car, and now pay for insurance, but I pay for gas and I pay for other stuff most kids get paid for them like my cell phone. Also, I drive 40 miles round trip to work 5 days a week in an SUV getting about 13 miles/gallon.

^^Why didn't you ask for a small car like a civic that doesn't guzzle gas AT YOUR EXPENSE?

You should sign up for a class in your area this summer.

I cant pass the damn eye test at the dps station. I hate looking through that ****ty machine thing. AND why the hell do the numbers have to be in block format. I dont want to go to the eye doctor.

on topic of the lefties using 2 feet:

It seems that might be true for me also, even though I havent started driving I notice when I play games such as Initial D etc etc, I use both feet and people look at me weird. It will also be a pain in the ass to drive a manual using my off hand.. I guess itll be like learning to use the mouse on my right hand; although it does have its perks, I can move the mouse and type with my left hand pretty quickly :D.

How does moving the mouse while typing help?

I have my license and a truck, but I have to get a job to afford the insurance. It is extremely expensivefor guys.

Well it doesnt have to just be moving the mouse, things like keeping a book upright, data input, games, etc. I basically can type with my left hand and do something else with my right... like type on my laptop at the same time haha.
