Seeing that M10 is approaching very quickly (for better or for worse) , I thought that it would be fun to reflect on the past couple of months and see where everyone applied, and to list them in order from favorite to least favorite (feel free to add explanations on the school’s ranking, too!)
Choate! (great interview, love the campus, I just get a really great feeling from Choate!)
Andover (everyone is so smart, great intellectual community, diversity...)
Taft (I really love all of the green grass on their campus
)
4: Milton (I like the proximity to Boston)
NMH (A student from NMH sent me an email, he was SO nice and I got a great feeling)
Middlesex (I just don't know anything about it, a bit small for me)
Hotchkiss (I know it's so stupid but I don't like the dress code: I'm really particular about that)
8: Putney (Smaller than I'd like, a bit artsy for me)
Berkshire (Small, I need a break from the mountains (I live in Colorado), never got a warm feeling from the AO's, a bit smaller than I'd like)
Where I applied:
Lawrenceville, Deerfield, Choate, Exeter, Hotchkiss, Milton, Middlesex, and (day) Prep school…
Personal Ranking:
I honestly have none :D… I might lean towards Choate a bit more (they have an awesome science program)…
I haven’t visited so if they are acceptances then I’ll probably decide a list on revisits…
Where I applied: NMH, Lawrenceville, Kent, Loomis, Cheshire
Personal ranking: No idea… If I had visited any of the schools, I would probably have a preference but I live about 4000 miles away from the nearest school…
@nikolaanna I totally get you… I live 7,000 mi away from the nearest school… All my information has been skillfully collected with my ninja google skills
Where I applied: Choate, Exeter, Andover, Middlesex, Hotchkiss
I really love all of them, but I have been having regrets on applying to Hotchkiss lately. Can anyone enlighten me with some of the pros with going to Hotchkiss? I’ve been hearing people complaining about things there that I didn’t know of and now I’m feeling a bit down about applying there for some reason. Things like the isolation of the school, bad cell phone service, and others have been mentioned and ahhh!
I love Andover and Middlesex, though. I think I might flip if I get accepted by either of them (and that’s saying a lot, because I can’t flip.)
Although the cell phone service and remote area of Hotchkiss are a reality (not going to say pro or con because that’s a matter of viewpoint) my DS pushed it way up on his list after interview day because of the people. He could not believe the openness and genuine caring of all of the people there. We had done a summer informal visit and he was ‘Eh’…but after being on campus during a school day, he really fell in love with the school. So, I guess depends on what you are looking for…if you want an urban setting and that is your priority, Hotchkiss may not be a good fit for you. Their facilities are outstanding, though, and the warmth of the people there is a true gem. I would say, though, do not regret applying anywhere, because wherever you may end up is a true opportunity not available to many who’d like to be in your shoes.
Applied to: Andover, Exeter, and three local prep schools (all of which are ranked favorably in my state.)
Ranking:
Honestly, A and E are tied for me. This small, awful part of me secretly hopes I only get into one so I won’t have to choose. I really loved both campuses, but I felt more comfortable at Exeter and more formal at Andover (probably because there were no classes at Exeter on my visit day.) I really love that all classes use the Harkness method at Exeter, since I’m very discussion-oriented, but I can better identify with the courses and clubs at Andover. I guess I could make a weighted pro-con list on the impossible chance I get into both, but I’d definitely do revisits.
I like the local schools a lot, but they’re definitely ranked far below A and E to me.
I only applied to Exeter and Andover.
I wish I had more time so that I could of have applied to other boarding schools too… everyone in here is applying to around 7-10 and I’m here, who only applied to two…
Don’t worry… its too late to cry over spilt milk… Besides there are plenty of people applying to one school…(@magicthecat , @LilyPatrick, @SeattleDreamer to name a few)
Yeah, I only applied for Andover so I guess I only have to deal with only one rejection right? I do wish I had applied to a few more though… M10 is kind of make or break for BS yikes…
