Where did you find your volunteering opportunity and what do you do?

I am looking for a volunteering opportunity but have no idea of where to find them.
Where do you guys find your volunteering opportunities and how??
and how many hours do you do per week?

I'm actually currently in the process of applying for a volunteer position.

Basically what I did was decide which organizations I wanted to volunteer with (I chose the Canadian Red Cross and Canadian Blood Services). I emailed both organizations, asking if they had any open positions that are suitable for a high school student. Both responded within a day and only CBS had available spots, so I asked the coordinator to send me the application form.

I'm applying for the administration position (photocopying, filing, envelope stuffing, etc). I hoping to go into Child Care or Customer Care (helping the donors, providing refreshments, etc.) later on. I have to commit to a minimum of 4/5 shifts per month for 6 months.

Your city/area might have a database of volunteer opportunities. Try Googling "Volunteer [City name here]".

I got arrested when I was 14 years old. It was a stupid mistake on my part; I've moved on. But the judge ordered me to do 90 hours of community service. My mom found a nice place for me to volunteer during school days from her co-worker. It's a home for handicapped children. Meaning severely handicapped. I'm glad I found it because I've been volunteering from the end of eighth grade till now and I really can't imagine myself anywhere else. Most of the children aren't able to speak but it's obvious they sense your presence. It's fulfilling for me because I'm never bored and I feel like I'm making a difference in their lives. The center's campus is amazing.

Plenty of centers have these opportunities. I used to volunteer at the library and hated it - it just wasn't for me. Nursing homes, community centers, and hospitals should all be helpful. Look for organizations that have goals you appreciate.

xho....

I'm glad you posted. It's nice to hear how you made something wonderful out of a stupid mistake. It's wonderful to hear about how you are being fulfilled by working with those children. I'm sure that they appreciate your affection and attention. :)

I used to volunteer at a local library, but it was really too boring for me.
anyother good experience?

I used to volunteer at a local hospital (our uniforms were a polo shirt and kacki pants.. not a candystriped apron).. I asked one of the volunteers how they went about starting that... and they just pointed me to the volunteer office where they were more than happy to give me an application.. I attended the training they had, and voila.. I was a volunteer.. did over 450 hours before I graduated. You can call your local hospital and see if they have a student volunteer program, and then ask to speak to someone involved about becoming a volunteer.

i read that colleges don't want random volunteer work. So i volunteer at a local theater and i love it. Try something you like.

i volunteer at my local humane society :)

i volunteer at my local firehouse

thanks!! all of the advices are really helpful

local library : I help with events for younger kids, parties, story times, etc. It's not soo bad.

SICSA (local animal shelter) : give the dogs (my friend works with cats) TLC, take them on walks, train them for basic things like walking nicely, sit, stay, come - that stuff.

Well, when I first started off volunteering, I found something through http://www.volunteermatch.org and then I continued working at the same organization.

i volunteer at the ronald mcdonald house, a place for families that have terminally (sp?) ill children. ):

My sister cofounded a tutoring organization her senior year, and I've been a part of it ever since. We've advertised locally, and we meet in the library three days a week from 6-8 PM. A bunch of us high school students just get together and help out wherever we can. Some kids come to do their homework they're having trouble with, projects they need help with, studying for/reviewing tests, etc.

Mainly, I volunteer at a local Science Discovery Museum and at my Town Hall.
In school, I Peer Tutor and Peer Counsel.
I also do other random one-time volunteering like working at local farms, forests, museums, senior homes, food banks.

Search around your town to places like senior centers or food banks and see who needs help.

Sry, I forgot to say how much I do.
300 hours at the museum, 200 hours peer tutoring, 25 hours at town hall, about 50 hours total with the one-time work.

Does your school have any volunteering fairs?
We have MLK sign-up day where you can sign up for many opportunities. I volunteered a day at the museum then decided I liked it so I came back for two summers.

community centers usually have listings for volunteer opportunities.
or if you really like a particular organization or have an interest in them, call them up or email them and ask if it is possible to volunteer.

like others have said, find something you love and see if you can volunteer for it.

this past week, i volunteered for 30 hours at a tennis tournament. i got free tickets to games, and got to meet these players up close. i go to the tournament to watch every year so this year i decided i wanted to get in for free, so i joined up. lol.

and for the rest of the year, i volunteer at an art gallery since well i like art. i do 5 hours a week, and it's not that bad. we work with younger children a lot.

I volunteered at a local community center. First it was teaching arts and crafts to kids and later a Big SIBS program. If you're interested in politics, political campaigns can always use volunteers. I've also volunteered at a gun control advocacy group (I just wrote them a letter). Some places will have established programs and others won't, but it's always worth a try.

Hey silverpetal,

I think it's awesome that u volunteered in a tennis tournament. I was thinking of doing something like that but I wasn't sure of the requirements and what type of tennis organizations would want volunteers? I would really appreaciate any info about this volunteer opportunity. Thanx.
