Where did your 3.0-3.3 GPA child get in?

My granddaughter has an 3.0 weighted they dont have unweighted at her school, 7 Honors, and 3 APS, Held 3 summer jobs, and one part time job during junior and senior year, one strong ec, volunteer work 2 day a week junior/senior year. So far she has been accepted to : Drew Unviersity, Seton Hall University, Penn State(Altoona), Albright College, and St. Johns University. She really wants to go to Syracuse University has been in contact with an alumni for two years(her mentor), and she also aplied to University of Delaware and College of William and Mary do you think she has a chance at Syracuse. Her gpa can be explained with 3 personal deaths, helaht issues, and etc… all placed in her personal statement.

Awright, best of luck to your granddaughter, who has had to overcome so much. If I am reading your post accurately, most of her grades have been C’s, although often in difficult courses. You do not mention her board scores or whether she is a URM or has top activities.

My guess would be that she should not get her hopes set on Syracuse, Delaware of W&M, but you never know. She has some good choices (Drew, etc) and will be fine.

Indeed, she might be better off at the small schools which have accepted her than at Syracuse and Delaware which are much larger.

Congratulations to her.

awright: agree with yabeyabe, but would like to add that it might depend on which school at Syracuse she has applied to…and as said, her SAT/ACT…I do know that certain SU schools are more/less competitive for admissions than others…and with course rigor, she may have a good shot…

which school at SU is she shooting for? If it’s Human Ecology, she should be a match…but it depends on the SAT/ACT ballpark…

and is she applying for FA?

If she is in the NY area, an interview at the Lubin House in NYC would be VERY helpful…

She is top 20 percent of her class but her SAT’s not good 1540/240. Her junior/senior year job is very important she works at Youth Court it just started dwon in Jersey. Her junior year she brought her grades up to an 3.65 yet the way that they do her gpa it only brought it up .3 point from a 2.7 to a 3.0. I will say that she allowed alot of things to hold her back especially the fact that she did not have a mother nor father in her life (her father abandoned her and her mother has been in a mental hospital since she was born. Either way I am proud of her for not allowing those things to overcome her

“I will say that she allowed alot of things to hold her back”

Not the place, I’m sure, but I’m curious about what yo mean by that.

BTW, my son proudly told me this morning that he is just .2 percentage points from a 3.8 GPA today !. … whatever that means…

Awright, the junior grades being so strong should help significantly.
Can you follow up on Rodney’s kind suggestion of Lubin House?
You did not mention her applying to any public schools–are you sure she can afford the expensive schools to which she applied?

awright: what school at Syracuse did she apply to?

historymom: Yes, my daughter is in-state for Univ of Oregon. Have you (your son/daughter) also applied at UofO? We are in the “holding breath” mode waiting to hear if she also gets into the school of music.

White female Tennesseean. Special needs student. 3.3 GPA, no APs. 29 ACT. Decent, unusual ECs. Excellent though painfully candid essay. Prospective psychology major. Applied for financial aid.

Don’t give up, 3.0 - 3.3 kids! Colleges want you!

Is there a huge difference in your chances of acceptance to College X if you have a 3.0 vs 2.9, all else being equal? As opposed to, for example, a 3.1 vs 3.0? Is there something magical about having a 3 to the left of the decimal vs a 2?

(Asking because S has a 2.92 and needs 3.4 this semester to bring it up to a 3.0-- seems a huge hill to climb…:frowning: …he’s a junior)

Congrats, BTW, on all the acceptances!

Hello All! My first choice is Miami Universiy of Ohio and I’m wondering if you can give me some feedback on whether or not I stand a chance!
