brianarae- don’t know much about these (and the financial aid) but a little geographic diversity SOMETIMES helps. Take a look at these two for an education major:
Ashland University in Ohio
Southern Oregon University
They don’t get a lot of play on this board but may suit you.

I’m a junior in high school and I’m primarily a B student, my GPA UW is around a 3.0, I have 4 AP courses so far. My SAT CR+M is a 1320 and my ACT composite is a 34. I’m from Ohio, do any of you have any experiences similar to mine or have any ideas of some colleges I could get into in or out of state? I’ll need some aid if I end up going out of state, which I’d prefer. Thanks!

Hi Adrose, Kudos for being diligent. What you’ll learn on this thread and the other “non-superteen” threads, is that there’s a lot to choose from for you. First off, decide what you want your focus to be: urban school? rural school? Possible major (even if it’s just a general direction). There are 3,000 schools in the US and in order to narrow it down, you need to decide what things are dealbreakers for you.

My D13 is an atypical student (and barely qualifies for this thread) She has a 2.9uw. But in the last 2 years she’s turned the academics around once she was able to get the help she needed for some learning disabilities. The last 2 years are more like a 3.8. When we applied to schools, we decided to focus on small LACs that would take the time to look at her transcript carefully. Her LORs were very good (in part because her teachers and GC saw that she turned things around). She studied VERY hard for the SATs and got 1400 CR+M (you’re not far off) and your ACT is great. She wants an urban LAC and we’re fortunate to not need too much FA.

So far she’s 3 for 3 in acceptances:

Tulane (EA)
U. of San Francisco (EA)
Univ. of Pittsburgh (RD)

Make sure you put a a few EA applications in, so that you’ll have a sense of what your options will be come March 2014.

Stay away from the IVY threads and the “chance me” threads–they give a completely distorted picture. The Jewish B student and 3.3-3.6 student threads here on the Parents Board will be good places to start reading and posting (we parents are pretty sympathetic and will try to steer you straight).

I’ve been dwelling quite a lot in threads telling me to go to community college and even I thought that was a little quixotic. I dont know if anyone will be able to verify if these colleges will be possible fits for me:

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
University of Cincinnati
Miami University (OH)
SUNY Stony Brook

Also, my freshman GPA (W) was a 2.9, sophomore was a 3.4, and as a junior it’s a small fraction above 3.5, so it’s been steadily rising.

I’m not familiar with any but SUNY Stony Brook, which attracts a pretty high-caliber of in-state students. Their STEM/pre-med programs are strong and as a result lots of high-scoring kids get in. You’d also pay out-of-state tuition. What’s your likely major?

When searching for my D, I used Princeton Review Guide, primarily to narrow down likely schools.I like the way their sidebars make it very easy to pick out likely/target/reach schools–the average SAT & GPA stats are easy to find. Still, just because you don’t fit perfectly, don’t let it dissuade you. Many parents also like the book “Colleges that Change Lives”. Personally, I wish it had an update and listed more schools–still it’s not a bad place to start.

Your SAT score is solid. If you can bump it up any more, it would be great. If it’s a bit higher than one of your target or likely schools generally admits, they sometimes give you a pass on the GPA–especially one with a strong upward trend. If you can stay in-state, you’ll save money on tuition and/or travel. Bigger schools generally have too many applications to delve into the more atypical student’s back story. That’s why we like the smaller, more flexible schools.

How are your LORs and ECs looking? Your essay has to be really strong too. Do you have a reasonable explanation for that freshman year. SInce I don’t know your intended major, I’ll just list some of the schools we applied to and that were recommended as possibilities. Some are “Reaches” and some are Likelies . It’s NOT a definitive list, so just consider it a starting point:

Hopefully your Guidance Counselor is on the ball and also has good suggestions for you.

adrose- if you give us a little idea of your interests, likes, dislikes re kind of school, we can probably give you some other ideas if you are interested. There is a wealth of experience on this thread re students with your kind of stats.

My S has a 3.2 uw GPA and an 1800 on his SATs. Has what I’d call a normal amount of extracurricular & plays on high school hockey team & the golf team (will continue both at club ? level in college). Here are his results to date:

Sorry for not posting, I’ve been quite busy as of late.

Thanks for responding kinderny, I’m mainly interested in fairly large public schools, preferably in Ohio. I’m interested in engineering and related fields, but I understand it will be difficult to find it into a good engineering school with my stats. If engineering isn’t a possibility, architecture is a close second. If you have any school recommendations, they would be extremely appreciated. I’m not keeping smaller schools out of contention either.

adrose. Not sure how your math and science grades are but take a look at Marquette. New engineering building, good internships. It is not in OH but close by.

As of right now im in AP Chemistry and AP Calc AB with a B average in each, and I’ll likely finish the school year with those grades. Is that good enough for a school like Marquette?

I think you really need to try and get that Calc AB grade up. Not just to get into an engineering program, but to do well in engineering you have to have a good grasp of calc. Willit get you into MU? I don’t know eng is very competitive at most schools, do your best and apply to a wide range of schools.

adrose – Is there a particular reason you want to go to an out-of-state public university? For a “B” student, even one with excellent ACT scores and a rising academic profile, your chances of being awarded significant scholarship/grant support is limited. I would say, however, that Stony Brook and Minnesota are two of the more affordable publics for out-of-state students. And there is no reason not to apply to Cincy and Miami of Ohio – very good schools and in-state tuition. Anyone telling you that a “B” student with a 34 ACT composite has no options but community college isn’t worth listening to.

I think Miami U is a great choice for engineering. It has a strong undergraduate teaching program. My D has applied and been accepted. She is taking AP physics & AP calc AB now with high Bs which I think is perfectly acceptable. As many have recommended, she will take these courses again at the college level to ensure that she has a solid understanding of the material before continuing on. An engineering degree will be challenging and require hard work wherever you decide to attend and some schools may have better resources to help you succeed than others. Those are good questions to ask while you research programs, but please don’t let anyone tell you that you have to master calculus in high school before considering engineering as a career.

Vibs & NewFaith – Check your stats with your selected schools on the Common Data Set. Do your stats fall within the 50% or are they higher or lower?

Most important advice given to me on CC is to find safeties that you LOVE! And this means financial safeties as well. Good luck!
