Sorry just wondering

Interesting. Did student apply to and get accepted to any other CTCL colleges?
D has 3.0 GPA (9 moves, divorce etc.) and 30 ACT with 7 years heavy commitment to music/chorus. Great writing skills. In need of substantial $$ aid. First Gen. Stressed as we do not see any options aside from CC’s at this point.

No no awesome act look at this forum

DS was similar to adrose–his GPA was a tad under 3.0, but his ACT composite was 33 (36 in math and 35 in science). He was accepted to all the schools he applied to (note: recruited athlete at 5 of the schools, strong EC’s, including team captain, strong essay and recs, and a engaging interviewee, according to several admissions reps). He was accepted to Hope, St. Olaf, St. John’s (MN), UW-Platteville, Ripon, Albion, Wabash, Ohio Northern, Birmingham-Southern and Emory & Henry. Several schools offered surprisingly large merit scholarships. The high ACT score definitely can translate into money! He eventually decided to major in Engineering, and chose Hope. He is flourishing unbelievably. He LOVES the school and the program and is finally motivated to perform up to his abilities. I couldn’t be happier for him. Note that Hope does not offer much in the way of scholarships if you aren’t from Michigan, but their overall cost is much lower than most private schools (37k out the door/year). Worth every penny to me!

Its early in the process but DD 3.4gpa and 28 ACT (retook this last Saturday with hopes of 30) got into her first college University of Iowa. I think she will be very happy there but still waiting to hear from University of Minnesota (home state) and depending on ACT looking at some chances for honors programs at less competitive schools. For everyone in the category don’t worry you will end up somewhere and will do just fine. Sometimes it gets a little depressing with super high competitive posters giving advise like “you have no chance go to community college”. There is nothing wrong with community college and I wish people would stop making it sound the land of the hopeless. I thank god for my community college saving me so much money that I was able to go onto a four year college and finish with no debt.

well can i get into a good college. I am from the Bronx I had a bad freshman year 77 average. I raised it to an 80 sophomore year and now I am a junior. If my grades continue improving like i get a 80-85 my current Junior year and i get a 90 my senior year can I get into a decent college like maybe Penn State University or Ohio State.

Fred, you will probably get better answers if you start your own thread.

Having said that…can you pay the almost $50,000 cost to attend OSU or PSU as an out of state student? I have to say, I think the main campuses of both schools are not a sure thing for you even with grades at 90 your senior year. You really needed that average for all four years.

What is the matter with the SUNY schools? You do know that people from outside your state feel these are very strong schools. The costs are modest even for OOS students, but even moreso for instate students.

so… I shouldn’t post my son’s stats and where he is applying, but rather wait until he gets in or rejected to post… correct?

Hi Early college
What did you mean by …“but if you apply SAT Optional you cannot get any merit aid.”
I totally agree with what you did, and congratulate you on your initiative . My D will be applying to some of same. She has a 30 ACT and 3.10 W GPA IB program. She has 6 years of gruelling schedule with EC’s in music/soprano. She wants to be a writer. We need major financial aid - which is why i wanted to know what you meant above. Ir appears the CLTL may offer more to candidates with these stats than reach colleges will I expect. I am not from the US and so this process has been challenging. We have a list of reaches, but not matches or safeties - if anyone can suggest some - we would appreciate it.

Applied to Pitzer
BARD
Smith
Holyoke
Bryan Mawr
Scripps - we figure several of these are out of the question entirely and so she may not apply here - today is the last day.

Puget Sound
Colgate?
Bates?
Hamilton?
Willamette
Oberlin?
Sarah Lawrence

Would love some suggestions as we know we have two things going against us - GPA and $$need. D does not want to be in a very isolated place. Have been looking at places in CA, MA, and within 3 hours of NY mostly. Open of course. Does it help to apply EA?

Forgot to mention she took Eng Lit SAT test with no prior study and got a 630 which she thinks she should not submit on app as it is weak - good idea or no? Seems a decent score is 700 plus. Already submitted one app without it. She is a first gen, and bi-racial. Not sure if that helps. (Caucasian and South Asian)

CaliforniaBrit: since your child has 3.1/30 and is into music, I’d recommend one of the colleges that actively looks for gifted singers, such as St Olaf (in college town, along with Carleton College, 45mn from the Twin Cities), but for maximum financial aid, look into Augustana, Augsburg, Luther, Pacific Lutheran… These schools have excellent choirs and are always looking for good musicians.

My 2012 S with a 3.6 from a top private prep, extremely rigorous, lots of AP’s with 4’s and 5’s, 2200 SAT’s, eagle scout, 1500 volunteer hours, needed aid, got flat out rejected from Hamilton, Bates, Colgate. Got a HUGE merit scholarship from Puget Sound… LOVE that school BTW. I would run not walk to College of Wooster… GREAT music scene there, and they also give great merit aid. Of all the schools we visited…and there were many, Wooster was the most impressive to me. Also, look at Lawrence U in Wisconsin, 2nd the St Olaf suggestion, and Willamette is great!

5boys, I am so excited for your DS14 as I’ve followed his news closely My D pretty much fits in this thread, and we have followed the advice from earlycollege and others. Our EFC is low, need is high, she is a white girl and her ECs are extremely drilled down to a 6-7 year theatre/speech resume. She applied to 16 schools and has received 9 acceptances thus far:
Univ Southern Indiana (merit)
Western KY Univ
Hiram (merit)
Emory & Henry (merit)
Ohio Northern (merit)
Guilford (merit)
Hanover (merit)
Ohio Wesleyan (merit)
College of Wooster (merit)

The merit ranges from about 8k (USI) to 22k(OWU) per year, avg about 19k. I think her essays were very good, as was her resume and recs…GPA is 3.46UW.

WOW!! Congrat’s to your D Chapter2… I guess I didn’t realize that she switched to a BA in theater like my S…or maybe she always wanted that? Does she have a first choice? I tell ya, my S REALLY liked Wooster, and with the huge scholarship he was offered, would most likely attended if he hadn’t got in K ED. My S’s stats are above this thread, but not by much:), and I always gravitated here, as my 2012 S was in this range as far as GPA. Both of my boys had a lot higher test scores that GPA… so hard to know exactly where to look. My 2012 S is now thriving at St Lawrence, so it all works out. There are just SO many great schools out there, that I would never have stumbled across if my S hadn’t been in this range.

D - 3.0/3.6w. Accepted:
Pace ($20,000/yr.)
Hofstra ($12,000/yr.)
Temple U
West Chester U
Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Coastal Carolina U
Western University

Deferred:
Elon - pending first marking period grades.

The remaining application decisions are dependent upon audition results. Good grief!

D 3.2 low SAT’s (never has been a good test taker), Good EC’s, recommendation and essay.

So far accepted with Merit to Roger Williams University, Keene State, and Curry. Waiting to hear from 3 more schools which should be received later this month. One school is waiting for mid-term grades which are not posted until the end of January (we are in CT).

Son has a 3.3 GPA (goes to a private Waldorf high school so no honors or AP classes)

Accepted to: American Univesity (ED1), Fordham University (EA), Seton Hall (received a large scholarship)
Deferred until March: Villanova
Won’t hear until March: University of Washington - Seattle

Obviously with ED1 at American, he will be going to American which was his top choice.
Fordham was his 2nd choice.

He will be studying Political Science and International Studies.

D has 3.2/3.4 weighted and low (for CC) test scores. She has a lot of community service ECAs and a lot of community service outside of school. She was convinced that she wouldn’t get in anywhere, it was really tough getting her to make a list of schools. She was breathing a huge sigh of relief (and so was I) when we got all of the applications done at the end of October.

Accepted to:
Aurora University merit and OOS grant
Chestnut Hill College merit
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts
St John’s College Annapolis merit
Towson University
Coppin State merit

She was deferred at Clark, and is still waiting for decisions from Hampshire, Lesley and Boston U.
