Gpa: 3.3 uw
SAT1:2000
Low income, very underperforming high school
Massive upswing (1.9 gpa freshman year to a 3.3 cum gpa senior year)

I was thought of as a punk before but eventually I buckled down and worked hard to get a 2000 on the sat when the avg in my school is a 1050 (with all three scores!

Accepted: Brown ED, Rhode Island College, University of Rhode Island, Providence College
Never got a response (Because of having to withdraw apps for ED):Boston College, Northeastern U, Brandeis, Umaine

Yes, 5boys, we really deliberated, but ultimately BA Theatre is more who she is. We are feeling very encouraged about 9 acceptances…and still have a few more to go til April (which are more discriminating/unlikely)…but she’s maintained around a 3.4-3.5 unweighted GPA at mid-year … so can you say PSHEW!!!

I can now relax a bit and feel pretty sure no one is likely to withdraw their offers. lol

I have called most, if not all, of the schools on her list, and so far, all merit and external scholarships (she’s in contention for three) will stack. Another big sigh of relief. Now, I will need to learn how to study up on the “how to compare offers” threads …

To everyone who just posted above with your/your child’s new results: congratulations on these acceptances! I really love this thread because I am in my late 40’s and when I was in school, these grades were GOOD. Period. Things are different, school is hard, expectations are high for colleges, and comparisons to others on this board are not always accurate. Not every kid has a flipping niche, either!

Give your self a pat on the back for getting into schools you like and who like you :-)))

Didn’t see this thread last year when going thru this process with my S but he definitely is in this category.

3.3 GPA 1980 SAT (720 M 660CR 600 W), Eagle Scout so lots of community service hours, part time job all thru high school. Looking to go into Mech Eng.

Got accepted: UCONN ( his top choice. Freshman there now), UNH, UMass Lowell (1/2 tuition and fees scholarship), URI, Roger Williams (merit $), Western New England University (merit $)

Got accepted to UMass Amherst but as undecided rather than into Eng program, RIT got accepted but into 3rd choice major

S doesn’t really fit in this thread but I didn’t want to start a thread for the below 3.0 GPA kids.

His stats: 2.84 GPA; no APs; 23 composite ACT score (after 3 sittings). Good LORs, good essay, 4 year varsity baseball player, lots of community service. He has a learning disability which I only disclosed at U of Denver, Marist, Delaware and Elon. For those schools that were test optional, I did not send scores.

Accepted at: Drexel, Fairfield, St. Lawrence, Hobart. Waiting to hear from: U of Delaware, Gettysburg, Marist; initially deferred EA from: Elon, Loyola, CU Boulder, College of Charleston, UVM (pending 1st quarter grades). Wait listed at Rhodes (after deferred EA); rejected at U of Denver, Furman.

I know that this thread is old, however I think that a school that should be mentioned is Azusa Pacific University. A friend of mine got in with a 3.15 (all regular classes). They disregard Freshman year GPA

Son has
GPA:3.2
SAT:1530(CR:490 M:600 W:440)
Major:Computer Engineering.
Accepted: Cal-state Fullerton,Cal-state La
Denied:All UC’s(UCR,UCI,UCSB,UCSD),Cal-State Long Beach,
He is just waiting for Cal-Poly Pomona

Son has
Overall 2.6 UW, 3.0 W. Jumped to 3.6 W for Junior year alone (please tell me this helps, even at a big university who might have less time to consider each app).
Honors courses-- a handful.
AP classes, signed up for Music Theory next year, but maybe he should add one more? He is taking Honors US Gov’t next year-- good idea to move this to AP? He is good at history, but it is hard to say how well he will do.
He has a learning disability. Very bright, but bad test-taker, especially if long.
His first ACT was 20 overall (his math brought him down). He will take it again in the fall.
Struggling with SAT SO FAR… will take again (CR 450, M 470, W 530)
He only wants to go to a N. Carolina School. I also can afford a state school, so that works. But they have gotten more and more competitive. Looking at App State, UNC-A, UNC-C, Western, UNC-G, UNC-W, ECU. Favorites are App St, UNC-C, and ECU.
He has good ECs, especially in music, though does not want to major in it (maybe minor). Community service. Summer job.
Counselors think APs or Honors not recommended unless got an A the previous year in subject. Been following that advice all these years with some regret. He goes to a challenging school. Wondering if C in AP is worse or better than A in regular class, and if he should go for the AP in Government next year. Any thoughts on his stats? Thanks for any advice!

S has
GPA 3.2
ACT 26
In private catholic boys high school in CA.
2 AP’s this sr yr (physics, comparative politics)
Good EC’s, V letter two sports (f-ball injury took him to tennis), captain, etc, yearbook/photography
Has ADHD (diagnosed 2nd half of jr yr)
Wants bus major
Think we make too much to qualify for any aide ($300k+), (notes: one Daughter at Cal 3rd year - antithesis of sons academic path)

So questions:
does not applying for fin aide help chances of admissions significantly in any way? (Is it possible for a 3.2 student to receive any?)
should he disclose ADHD? (Will they skip him and rather admit a non school fund/effort sucking student?)
his wish list of schools:
USF, colorado state, U Colo Boulder, Oregon state, Univ of Denver, Michigan state, Seattle Univ, WA State Pullman,

@vichig I can comment on USF (University of South Florida) D’15 was recently admitted; they recalculate GPA just core classes so if he took any honor; AP they give a weight to those. All grades are straight A•B•C•D•. No ±. So he may have a higher gpa for this school.
He would qualify for the small OOS for his ACT but would do better if >28.
Hope this helps.

I have a 3.1W GPA, no unweighted. 29 ACT on my first and only try. I also go to a well regarded private high school that always has acceptances below the national average.

Accepted:
University of Alabama (2nd choice)

Waiting:
University at Buffalo
SUNY Binghamton
FSU
University of Florida
University of Connecticut
James Madison University
Penn State Main Campus (1st choice)
Syracuse University
Ohio State University

Lots of APs and Honors, varsity sports, captain of a varsity team, volunteer hours, tons of out of school extracurriculars. I think I’m going to get into most based on what other acceptances in my school. UF and OSU are my biggest reaches, and I’m really hoping to get into UF.

So your kid is a theatre major? Very interested in your post. Mine is a junior in highschool and will be applying soon. Current GPA in the 3.0 range. Scary.
I am a junior in high school. I have a 3.2-3.3 gpa. I go to a very high marked private school . I also got a 27 on the act. Along with this I have been on an extremely competitive swim team since I was 7. I have practice every day after school, on Saturdays and 3 times a week in the morning before school. I don’t know if that helps to show I am a dedicated student athlete. Im also a member of NHS and in 3 clubs. Do you think I can get into
-College of Charleston
-Marist College
-University of Alabama
-Ole Miss
-Sewanee
-University of South Carolina
-Auburn
-Clemson
-Catholic University

I just want to put together a list of potential colleges to look into!
@aagostino1998 Yeah it’s very possible. I also went to a very high marked school(public school instead) with amazing test/gpa averages: I had a 3.27 uw gpa and a 2200 sat and got into several top public schools including purdue, penn state, and ohio state
